alternative was used first inthe late 80s to describe nirvana and most other bands with that type of style ,especially bands from the seattle area, as an alternative to the 'hair metal' bands that were popular then (bon jovi,etc!.)Www@Enter-QA@Com
They are anything that isn't mainstream music!. Today it is also the style of music that used to be underground but is now just commercialized and recycled over and over and!.!.!.(ad nauseum)

I usually take alternative to mean not indie but not rock either, somewhere inbetween!.
Then theres also the usual industry definition which means anything good that came out after 1979-ish!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Alternative used to mean bands like Fall Out Boy, when they were not the mainstream!. It is a term that changes it's meaning all the time!.
For example, it used to be Fall Out Boy, Panic At the Disco, any of that pop rock crowd!.
Now, good examples are Vampire Weekend and Venus Hum!. In general, these sorts of bands use engineering techniques or different instrumentation than your normal mainstream rock band!. They could also be a blend of styles and it can't be categorized in any other genre so it just becomes alternative!.
