Answers:
You mentioned Bach, but not any specific pieces!. If you don't already have them I'd suggest:

Air (for a G String)
Bouree
You can hear guitar versions of those two at:

Another Bach piece that's wonderful on classical guitar is
Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring
The premiumbeat site has that piece as well but arranged for a string quartet!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There is no "standard" back ground music!. What you have chosen seems excellent!.

I would pay to listen to you play pieces by those composers!.

Perhaps some Debussy arranged for the guitar , if you can get it !?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Use your best judgment and common sense when playing a party!. Atonal music NO, things that are too hard for you to play No!.

After that the whole objective in that setting is not to get noticed in the wrong way and to get hired again or at least earn a healthy referral!. That's it, it's not a recital or a concert!.

The great thing about classical guitar is you can play almost anything and it will sound pleasant and unobtrusive!. Everything you mentioned seems fine to me but those pieces might not be recognizable to the general public which isn't such a bad thing!. You might want to find some easy arrangments of popular classical themes to sprinkle in there (there's a million classical guitar collections for this) I wouldn't repeat one piece too many times but if you've been hired for 4hrs you could get away with it a little!.

If you want to earn extra points you could consider the type of art being shown and play music relevant to that but I think this could be a big mistake and when I'm hired for this type of gig I ask!. If it's wacko contemporary art and you're playing wacko contemporary classical it may be sensory overload to the gallery and not help the parties objectives e!.g!. selling paintings or taking attention away from the featured "visual artists"!.

Classical arrangements of popular and jazz are usually appreciated and on classical guitar it's going to sound good!. Again when I'm hired I usually mention some of my party repertoire (classical hits, popular songs, jazz tunes) and ask if they have any special requests or "atmosphere" they're going for!. This shows your consideration of the individual client and helps lessen the guessing game!. Good luck and have fun

Here's a link to a typical "gig book"
http://www!.sheetmusicplus!.com/store/smp_!.!.!.
I don't know about the quality of the arrangements but the contents are "background" central

edit: I wouldn't consider Brouwer (some of the etudes would be perfect for an art gig) or Villa Lobos atonal in anyway!. I just mentioned (atonal music in general) as an example of what not to play!. If you do gigs all the time you know what to do!. You couldn't ask for a better exhibit as far as classical guitar goes!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
