This is an amazing site, right here!. Most, if not all of these programs can be found elsewhere on the web, but this is nice and organized!. I recommend Audacity for your basic stuff!.
For a drum machine, try to get Fruity Loops (but it costs $)!. For free, you can use a VST (Cirtual Studio Technology) plugin host (MadTracker works for free, but you may want something you can export with!. With the free version of Madtracker, you have to set up Audacity to record what MadTracker plays, which can confuse beginners) and a VST drum machine plugin!. I haven't used any drum machines from this site!. I normally will program the MIDI drum track (tediously) into Cakewalk Plasma's Making The Hit (1990's, I found for $15 at Half-Priced books)!. Depending on my mood, I might play the MIDI track through my keyboard and record my keyboad's line-out to get the drums!. Or, I'll just set up Cakewalk to record using the standard MIDI driver that came with my motherboard's sound card!. If you can find it, Cakewalk Plasma Making The Hit is the best overal virtual studio I have ever used, the only problem is that it is too old to use VST plugins!. There are other, similar, newer items from Cakewalk, but those can cost more, so I haven't used them!.
The ideal program would be Protools, because that is what the Pro's use (hence the name), but that costs $!. Don't neglect your hardware too, your computer's soundcard may be woefully inadequate, resulting in frequent trips to Radioshack to buy new adapters!. I use the Delta 1010LT, which is great for live recording and MIDI use!.
As for the mic's, well, one comes free with Cakewalk Plasma, but it isn't the greatest quality!. Don't get some crappy $10 kareoke mike, make sure that it has some decent weight to it!. Microphone cables should be balanced XLR (3-pins)!. This eliminates buzz and interference, and is another reason that I use my sound card!. If your sound card does not have balanced XLR inputs, you will have to use a $4-8 adapter, and deal with a quality drop!. The single most commonly used mic in history is the Shure SM57!. THere are PZM microphones, which use flat surfaces to pick up sound, there are all kinds of different patterns too!. Usually, you get what you pay for!. There are different mics for different jobs, but I believe that the Shure SM57 is good for both vocals and guitars (I've been meaning to get one myself)!. That mic might work with a bass, it might not!. Drums can damage mics meant for less extreme sounds!. Experiment, try using multiple mics, multiple tracks, line-in recording, go crazy!. There are tons of books on this subject, just go to a bookstore!.
Remember, spread your budget out!. Don't blow all of your cash on an $800 recording program if you're recording a squire strat pack through a play-n-sing microphone!. Audacity will be a good enough quality for amatuers, possily even pros, and it's free!. The sound card, mic, and equipment all have to comingle in perfect harmony!. And you, as a musician, have to be up to the rigors of recording!. You probably think you play cleanly, heck, every few months I start to think that I'm getting smoother and cleaner!. Then I start recording!. You'll be amazed at how many mistakes you make trying to record!. Usually, you'll notice them while you're playing, and stop and re-do!. Sometimes, you have to play it back a few times!.

also, for $60, look into GuitarPro!. It is useful for MIDI and drum tracks, as well as tablature for both bass, guitar, and sometimes more!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

you should get pro tools
its a pretty good software
and meshes al of the instruments together automatically when you press a button :DWww@Enter-QA@Com

Cakewalk will record instruments and vocals over each other, as many as you want!. way easy to use too!.!. they have it in my school!. Again!.!.!. its called CakewalkWww@Enter-QA@Com
