What is your greatest resource for new music?!

Question: I'm not asking for new music. I am curious about how you find it. Friends? Magazine reviews? Your local drinking establishment?

Answers: I'm not asking for new music. I am curious about how you find it. Friends? Magazine reviews? Your local drinking establishment?

Hi Persephone, I gotta say magazines like

Skyscraper
Pitchfork Media
Spin (on occasion)

... and music sites like Last FM are definite sources of new music for me. Also, Yahoo's Music Jukebox works similar to Last FM in that you type in the name of a band, and it'll pull in a list of similar new artists of the same vein, that you'd probably like

Friends.
Gigs
and youtube.

myspace, and friends... who get it off myspace,
and the local venues where bands play shows... wich you learn about on myspace:]

most music is on iTunes
or for independant bands you can use eMusic
or CDbaby
you can go to Starbucks or anyother place that let's bands get a gig and ask who's good

I find most of my music online. In fact, I've found a lot of new bands using this site. Pandora is also very helpful, and so are magazines.

Ale: Most of my friends listen to mainstream music, so I'm the one who find bands for them.

A lot of my friends are into 'metal'(nu metal) and pop/punk. One of my best friend's favorite band is MCR. But most of the bands I recommend they enjoy. I just stay away from their iPods as well.

Headbanger's Ball: Usually see a song that sounds pretty awesome and check out the band.
Metalhammer: Articles and reviews
Concerts: Bands I didn't know about who were on the bill that sound good live so I check them out.
I hate to say it but Myspace as well..if my friend has a song by a band i've never heard before and I like it..

I use the internet radio Pandora.com. Put in any artist or song that you like, then Pandora finds songs similar to that artist or song. My music library has expanded since starting on Pandora!

I never EVER ask my friends! I find my own music! They listen to different music then me. Well, they do listen to Rock and some Metal but they listen to bands I really don't like. I usually look up new music here in R&P. People listen to good music here.
EDIT:
Wake all the Children, I do introduce them to bands I think they would like. My friends are into mainstream "Rock" bands. So, I like to stay away from their iPods but, I make them listen to all my music.

I have a few friends that listen to crap like that. One of them loves MCR another LOVES Nickelback. -shivers- He got mad at me because I wrote something stupid about Chad Kroeger in my MySpace. He wants me to take it out but I believe its art! They just listen to crap.

The internet.
Without the internet I probably wouldn't be listening to 90% of the music I listen to now.

I'm actually looking for new bands right now, I go to the Rock and Pop section; see what bands are mentioned quite a bit and then look them up to see if i like their music. It works out pretty well. Sometimes i go to this neat little shop that sells used cd's, buy myself a few that look good and try them out.

Friends mostly, outside of the net and on it. I also find this board to be a great source for new music.

I don't read many magazines and those I do tend to be technical job-related journals and I don't go out clubbing too often anymore.

I've managed to find alot of new music through friends, magazines, music channels on TV, radio, programme or film soundtracks, gigs ... yeah, I think that's it lol

Itunes
Youtube
Y!A
Wikipedia

Friends.
Internet.

Actually, you blokes on here have been a tremendous help. I dont come here ONLY to trash emos....

*Taking the Bullet....totally agree with you about rock band and guitar hero. I never heard of the Sord before that game. And it helped me introduce some younger friends to some real good music, and get over their ingrained prejudices. One young lass (18) listens to shiny toy guns and red jumpsuit apparatus and the like...well, jus the otherr day she asked me to make her copies of all my Maiden music. I was so proud... *sniffle*

***And am I the last human being who doesnt own an Ipod????

Friends. Followed by (as stupid as it sounds) games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. I'll like some of the songs on the game and then find more songs by that same band and wind up liking the band.

Blabbermouth.Net is a heavy metal/hard rock site I go to read info or news on new and old bands. Revolver and Alternative Press magazines are another source as well as here on yahoo answers.

yeah, definitely the internet, and friends, especially hedZy. :)

Most of the time from friends, but sometimes the radio.

Also from a few websites i go to.

Youtube, gigs in my local, and magazines like Mojo & Classic Rock etc :)

i use R&P and i also have XM radio in my car. they're always playing new stuff.

I get my music from many different places

Friends: Good friends, but most of 'em are into techno with a guitar (i.e. Panic at the Disco) so they're always recommending stuff like that.

Wikipedia: I search bands I already like, then go to 'related acts'. It works out most of the time, but not that much.

My parents' CD collection: I'm always finding acts I've never heard of but are still good from there...however not all of them are that good.

Here: Yeah, if I see alot of people on Y!A saying good things about a band (especially if it's in R&P) I'll usually end up listening to them a few days later.

Killer Peaches- Don't worry, I don't have an iPod either!

Good morning Persephone :0 )

(Is it too late for morning? Ah well)

I mainly get all of my new music off of the Internet, mainly off Yahoo Answers, or people I met on Yahoo Answers. I talk to several people here by email, and get a lot of great recommendations like that.

I use to also order CMJ magazine which came with a cd with a song from a bunch of new artist that had albums coming out. They were from both indie and mainstream record labels and sometimes were hit or miss but I found some pretty good stuff through that.

Killer Peaches: Hey! I don't have an iPod either!

my local indie rock radio station! no commercialized music on this station, its awesome!

pandora.com. Great online radio, and it's pretty good at finding what you may like.

Deep Cuts (channel 40) on XM radio.

or Pandora Internet radio.

or friends, family, fellow musicians.

I'm going to be highly original, a little geeky, and say wikipedia :D my greatest resource.

I mean, my friends listen to top-40 hiphop (nothing wrong with it, just it's the genre requiring the least effort to 'find' the music, it just 'falls' straight into your lap. anyway :)
magazine reviews? yeah, pitchfork.com are pretty mad
my L.D.E. ? yeah, I'm 16, so, not much goes round sipping cokes at my local mcdonalds :(

I use pandora or soundslike to find bands similar to ones I like, then wikipedia to browse their discog and see details/reviews etc in one place. meh it works for me. and you did ask.

I love end of year lists (top albums, top tracks, etc)

www.performermag.com
www.tunecore.com
www.reverbnation.com
www.laweekly.com
www.ocweekly.com
www.allmusic.com

R&P has definitely expanded my musical horizons. :] I like Pandora too.

I chat with my friends about music occassionally, just because they listen to completely different stuff than I do (my best friend listens to all these underground ska bands.) But R&P has changed my music taste. You guys listen to some great stuff!

purevolume is awesome for that.
in r&p i can hear of some new stuff
friends
myspace music i guess
but you kind of have to be able to search for the name and everything
but also hometown bands are of course always known someway or another

Music Choice, my friends like crappy music

Friends on the Internet and real life. My tastes are changing, and I'm starting to appreciate the more melodic stuff than I used to. I totally love people that write and sing their own stuff, so those are the people I search out.
