Me...?!
No ~ it's an opinion based question, and if you think Kurt is one of the best, then it doesn't bother me :)

For me, it's these people :~

Mark Knopfler
Ian Anderson
Stevie Nicks
Candice Night
Sandy Denny
Jim Steinman }:)

And, of course, the genius that is Bob Dylan!

Bob Dylan was a lyrical genius. The greatest ever.

Ne-Yo and The Dream

May not be the best, but my favorite is Jason Ross from a band called Seven MAry Three

other then kurt, i would say Bert Mccracken. Lyrical Genius.
Davey Havoc
Randy Blythe
and
Ben Jorgenson.

but thats just me :D

yup...even i'll go with kurt cobain...he had a certain flair for writing songs...even though they rarely made sense....but the fact that he truly dint give a damn as to how others felt for his songs made him a hero...he was a very genuine composer and every song had a hidden meaning...except for perhaps Teen Spirit :D

even roger waters was classic

I have to say Kurt Cobain also' but another is Billy corgan the singer for smashing pumpkins .i have been listening to the Siamese dream' and that is some great song writing and it sounds like from the heart poetry,

Hank Williams (Sr. of course).
Had he lived past 29 years old, I imagine he would have already written every song around today.

I know that this is a safe choice, but I'm going with Lennon/McCartney

Trent Reznor

Mr. Dylan. The King of Lyrics. A true poet.

bob dylan and neil young hands down!!!

they were known mainly for their song writing.

or john lennon

one man republic
they wrote leona lewis's song
bleeding love
hehe

Lou Reed. He will write a song, a great song too, about any subject imaginable!

i like youngbloods' and roy khan's lyrics...they r from kamelot

I would have to say...
Trent Reznor

John Fogerty

John Pettibone of Himsa
Maik Weichert of Heaven Shall Burn

In my opinion, these people have written some of the most astonishing lyrics I've heard. Ever.

Sharon Den Adel
Emilie Autumn
Tuomas Holopainen
Trent Reznor

Nick J!!! DUHH!!!

try Conor Oberst of Bright eyes he will blow you away, he goes toe to toe with Dylan and trust me very few people in the world I believe could do that! listen to landlocked blues!

Neil Peart- Rush

wow great question.. we have so many great writers to choose from....here are some that i love....
1. Geezer Butler & Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath,
2.Ronnie Van Zant - Lynyrd Skynyrd
3.Frank Zappa
4.Ian Gillan & Ritchie Blackmore
5.Gregg Allman & Dickie Betts -
6.Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull
7.John Lennon & Paul McCartney - The Beatles,
8.Elton John & Bernie Taupin
9.Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Rick Wright & Nick Mason - Pink Floyd
10.Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon & Roger Taylor - Queen
11.John Fogerty - Creedence Clearwater Revival
12.Robert Plant, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin
13.Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie & Lindsey Buckingham - Fleetwood Mac

okay see i would pick some from all directions music is diverity and the more we have the better we are, all writers are great ones everyone might not like all the same but thats what makes the world go round,, have a great day and enjoy your music

For me it would be either:
John Fogerty- CCR
Or
Jim Morrison- The Doors (Obviously)
or
Ronnie Van Zant- Lynard Skynard
