for white stripes, those digitech pedals are probably what you want. jack white uses them in the white stripes AND the raconteurs.
if you want something that tom morello uses, well, he uses a lot of different pedals, he uses a delay pedal, whammy pedal (yes whammy pedal, not whammy bar), and a wah wah pedal.

Really, one pedal would fit those bands pretty well. The Digitech Grunge is a good pedal for those (especially Nirvana and the White Stripes), and its cheap (like 60 bucks).

big muff is a distortion pedal that popular with Mudhoney who had a large influence on Kurt and Nirvana, but i dont know if he actually used it.
