Well, based on my own personal impression, I would say that all *commercial* music, regardless of genre, has generally declined. I can barely stand to listen to mainstream radio anymore: insipid DJ's talking over the beginning of songs, cutting songs short (in some cases by a lot more than the customary 2 to 5 seconds), play-lists that don't vary much if at all from day to day, and of course commercial interruptions every 10 minutes. Mediocre music makes it that much worse. Here in the tri-state area, however, I'd say that there's some good indie music to be heard on the low end of the FM dial (88 to 92, roughly)- college stations mostly, who play some refreshingly good stuff on occasion- rock, folk, alternative, jazz, etc.

The majority of good rock nowadays is European. So I see what your getting at.

Perhaps you're not looking in the right places.

There is /plenty/ of good music out there, in all places including America, but I doubt you'll find it if you rely on the mainsteam... which is what I suspect you are doing.

The internet will help you find new music...it's dividing quickly.

The one thing for sure is that mainstream radio...is dying in all genres.

Mainstream music is. However, underground music and music from other countries seem to be getting better and better. You just have to turn of your radio station and look for it.

I think that the way the Music Industry splits up the field of ROCK (for example) into a myriad of genres is repulsive! Simply because a band is labeled as "Eclectic" or "Alternative" (for examples) has done more to HURT music than to help it. Because of so many splits, many great songs and artists are never heard on radio stations simply because they cater to only one genre. Therefore, the public is deprived of music they WANT to hear simply because they can't pick up a radio station in their neck of the woods that plays a diverse mix of music that appeals to more than just one genre of music listeners. I think what I'm trying to say here is, if there were only the genre of ROCK, much, much, much more music would be available to ALL listeners.

Mainstream music always sucks unless it has a really catchy tune to it.

Go and dabble in some rock that is NOT pop rock like FOB/MCR/Paramore. I mean like Queen and Iron Maiden or some modern metal like Within Temptation or Nightwish.

Plenty of good music being made. Listen to something other than the radio and you just might find it.
