It is almost imposible to explain Robert's lyrics.
They are just whatever was going on in his mind at the time...
But part of that song is to do with greed, so it may be implying that our darker side {the shadow} is allowed to take over from our good side {the soul}.
cant put too much thought into these things, it was designed to blow your mind so to speak.
If you peruse the net, you'll find the answer that verse has to be taken in relation to the rest of "Stairway To Heaven."

I always thought it meant that the way we live our lives doesn't help our soul's growth. :)
