If underground artists are so good why haven't they been signed to a major l!

Question: I've always wondered that...personally I don't really listen to them much.

Answers: I've always wondered that...personally I don't really listen to them much.

Because most of them don't have mainstream appeal. Major labels usually want artists that make club hits. Most underground artists make songs that focus on content rather than mass appeal.

EDIT: This is kind of oxymoronic because usually when an artist signs to a major they make the crossover from underground to mainstream, so of course underground artists aren't signed to major labels.

Because Record Labels aren't like happy meals, there just isn't enough to go around

Sometimes it's because they don't want to have the record deal.

I disagree with you. If you look at some of the artists that are currently out and signed to a record label ... you'd realize that record deals are pretty much given away.

How is it stupid to not want a record deal?? It's all about what the person wants n how they feel about the sisuation. Do you wanna stay tru to yourself and b real about what you rap about OR do you wanna go commerical and rap about what everyone else is. Yeah you'd get money ... but sumtimes it's not all about the money.

It's supply and demand - the major demand right now, as Mechanical said, is for club bangers and catchy hooks. If you're not willing to do that, then you're not so likely to get a major contract.
Some of them choose to stay underground so that they can have more artistic control because the major labels tend to hold a lot of sway over what you put out and when.
Being signed to a major label doesn't necessarily make you good. That would make every boyband on the planet good.

because they choose not too.. to be underground is a whole open world of being a true artist and creating what you want to create, not some as*hole record exec telling you what the "people" like. trust me the underground music scene, (hip hop, rock, etc.etc.) is a hell of a lot better than any mainstream music crap being pushed onto our airwaves

Because music producers only want artists who will attract younger people, and have sex appeal. Underground artist talent is too raw and unique for the public ears. They'd be banned in a heartbeat for speaking the truth and saying what's on their mind. And record labels wouldn't want to put up with the artist being in trouble all the time for that reason, so they don't sign them.

lots of reasons

-maybe they aren't that good
-maybe they are favorites to a few people, but the rest of the world isn't ready for them, which isn't enough w/big record companies. they don't care what you sell, but it has to sell (A LOT)
-they might not want to be known as "commercial"
-they might not agree w/all the details that come w/the deal... believe me, this is probably so much bigger than most people realize.
-they might not have good management/publicist. you need this - underground/commercial & you will never go commercial w/o this.
-maybe the don't want to betray the people they came up with & leave them behind. record companies don't always want your whole crew.

all good reasons

ummmm....hellooo "undergound" artist, your question answers itself.

Because record labels are not listening 2 demo no more nor searching my bro raps and he know s and does wat he has 2 make it with shows and more and underground labels love him and manage him so u decide 4 ya self myspace.com/musicwasmysaviornowyuare U PICK DAMMIT

Because if you have something real to say then they tell you you have no commercial appeal. Record companies are regulated by the government and they know that real music moves masses against oppression. Look at 60s and 70s. The government wants to keep us occupied with stupidity so they can get away with the BS thats going on.

have you heard of immortal technique how he turned down a def jam offer for millions ????

Most of you are correct, but the short answer is...Most of you wouldn't support any underground/indie artist...the topics these artist discuss most times are way beyond your everyday conversation and are not typically popular to a large audience...The typically inde artist doesn't resort to the same topics of drugs, sex, cars, money, etc. and when they do it's from a completely different approach...

Well i believe underground is more famous better hip hop or Rap they dont care bout the money they just love to sing rap and everything so they dont care if they get famous but 90% of them have skills sick rhymes you should check them out like Big L one of my personal favorites and also Canibus and Gang Starr also Living legends i can go on but yea
