Can we just call Metal, Metal, and drop all this "sub-genre" silliness!

Question: Seriously... there are more bloody sub-genres than there are bands to belong to them, and no 2 people seem able to agree on wtf goes where.

It seems only the metal elitists actually give a shite, and honestly they can kiss my ****.

It's either metal, or not. Who freaking cares what type it is , as long as you F*n like it?

To answer your question, real metalheads are the ones that don't listen to Linkin Park, System Of A Down, etc. Real metalheads listen to bands like Witchfinder General, Atheist, UFO, Saxon, Blessed Death, Kreator, etc.

To an extent, I agree. Heavy Metal is Heavy Metal, whether it's Benediction or Black Sabbath. I don't mind though, having just a few sub-genres like thrash, death, doom, black, and traditional metal. I feel it's sad though, that many metal fans put themselves in little corners within metal.

Maybe. NU metal just isn't metal though. Any Swedish metal is good metal.

I approve this message.

I agree. Except Nu Metal is total crap and does not deserve to be linked with Metal.

Not to be mean or anything, from researching Metal every sub genre of Metal has its own requirements either instrumentally, or lyrically, and often both to be considered part of that sub genre of Metal.

Ex: The Death Metal typical vocals aka "The Cookie Monster" is different from the typical Black Metal vocals that is a form of screeching from the back of your throat.

I agree i hate sub-genres especially if there invented by one band, a band shouldn't be able to create a sub-genre for themselves especially if theres a only a slight difference in what they do

personally i hate how "tech" is being placed in front everything now i think that thats becoming the new "core"

i have trouble keeping up with sub-genres with bands constantly switching genres cause they don't want to be lobbed in with a certain band who really cares

Seriously dude. Rock needs 3 subgenres. Metal, Punk and Prog, chances are every band falls under one of those 3 categories.

Thank you.

I'd like 3 Countrycore CD's please.

I like subgenres, you don't. Oh f*cking well. Get over it.

i like the sub-genres, but i can't stand the sub-sub-genres, so the bigger ones are ok (nu-metal, metalcore, death metal, deathcore...) but stuff like nintendocore is just absurd

no, sub-genres specifies our music tastes.

10 bucks says the person below me knows what genre Protest The Hero is from.

"metal elitists?" i prefer music enthusiast, thank you very much. and if you weren't a conformist in anyway you'd take more interest in what genre you're truly interested in.

no, it isn't "either metal or not." how do you compare Metallica to Bullet For My Valentine? they're two VERY different bands, that are technically metal.

why am i arguing this? if you don't care, you don't. good day sir.

True oh so true.I think the sub-genre is way out of hand.I can still remember when Metal was Metal-Speed/thrash/death/pop.Gezz man when Sabbath started it they were jazz/blues.Zeppelin were blues.Kiss were called "Thunder Rock" what ever that is.Now its symphonic metal -so-on so forth.Way to much. The gods of metal must be very upset.

I respect this question in a way.
But no, because, there ARE sub-genres of metal that can't be placed in another genre.
I really cant see point in going into much detail here because it seems like a subject you are pretty firm on.
We all have our own oppinions.
i just hope you're not a slipknot / disturbed fan.

i have a feeling that if you appreciated real metal you wouldnt be posting this question. .. but hey, once again we all have our own oppinions i just dont respect all of them .

I can see having a couple just for the sake of people's disagreement, but 10 or 12?
That just gets ridiculous.

I think metal and nu-metal should be separated. That's about it.

Im sure that someone has already said this but the genres are good to a extent because it really helps me pick out new bands i enjoy. If I know I like "metalcore", i can look up a dozen metalcore bands right away. What bugs me is when it gets down to the sub-genres.

I agree! Great question!!! and definitely something that needs to be addressed. Breaking everything into 15+ categories sucks all the fun out of it, causes too many debates over what goes where and takes the focus away from just enjoying the music.

i agree but i love Nu metal

korn+disturbed ftw
