What exactly is CHRISTIAN METAL ?!

Question: Confused about this genre..
Is it metal preaching about God and Jesus ? Then i find that really weird..
And who are the main audience for this type of music .. Christians ?

PLUS :
Can you post a piece of lyric which could help me understand this genre better.. ?? And examples of band would be nice.

It's like non-alcoholic beer.

Metal is all about anger, fury, irreverence, and generally, sex and drugs as well... part of the reason I love bands like MANOWAR, Lamb of God (they aren't Christian btw), Lacuna Coil, Strapping Young Lad, et al.

Beer is all about getting tipsy or drunk.

Take those things out of each and what have you got left? Pointless, boring, poser crap.

its good stuff
lol

um...idk
i've never REALLY heard christian METAL but more of christian ROCK

Its just really bad music. Period. Point blank.

Christian Metal is a travesty.

Who ever heard of rebelling by praising? And how many different ways of saying "he is love" "I praise him" "I thank him" can you come up with anyway?

Metal is about aggression and anger. Mostly just aggression. How aggressive can you be in loving someone you read about in a book??

I'm getting a headache.

i didnt even know it existed.
That's a pretty odd genre if it really is....?

Well I see it as a band that preaches about the god of Christianity.
Some bands call themselves Christian Metal bands but they don't actually sing about it - in which case I feel they're just trying to segregate themselves from others... because what's the point?
So, to me, Christian Metal is Christian bands talking about Christ - I don't consider bands with members that /happen/ to be Christian Christian bands.

I enjoy a few Christian Metalcore bands - I really like Blessthefall
"I stand broken, please god hear my cries, he does everytime." - Rise Up

I'm very anti-religious so it baffles me how I can enjoy bands of that nature. I guess with those bands I concentrate less on the lyrics and more on the music itself.
I'm a weirdo, whatever.

Lol. Those Blessthefall lyrics are in my cousins MSN screename.

Christian metal is metal music with Christian lyrics, or sometimes a band claims to be Christian just because all the members are of Christian faith.
They're not necessarily "preaching"... it's just their context that might have religious mentions or something.
I don't understand why people are so upset about Christian metal/hardcore/whatever... it's not like it's an oxymoron.

Solid State Records has Christian metal bands.

They do not have preach about Jesus in their songs, but the band needs to be united on the same religious front. Many bands do not go around singing about God/Jesus yet they classify themselves as a Christian band because they are playing their music for God, not for anyone else. But saying that, yes some may preach in their music, or not heavy preaching but have Christian themes to their music. And they also do not sing about un-Godly subjects, like conventional metal bands do.

You may have heard of Underoath, they are a hardcore Christian metal band. Here are some lyrics-

Angels Below- Underoath

You took me over the edge
And left me there to fall by myself
The word love meant nothing to you
I was taken in with your lies
And you knew I was too weak to leave
But you were wrong
You mean nothing to me now
Every time you think of me
I hope your heart dies
I have found my true love
And you now burn beneath my feet
You'll pay for everything you've done
If you could die
I'd be the one with the gun
From this day on
I'll write the songs you hate
And pray the prayers that drive you away
It's time to let the world know how
You tried to ruin my life
Up burn my thoughts of him
The virus leaves me

You can see from these lyrics that the songs meaning has a direct association with God. Not really much help unless you hear it being performed, as the lyrics could be taylored for any genre of music.

Other bands-
Tourniquent
Mortification
Ressurection Band

BTW, to the first poster, TobyMac isn't metal, he is electronic/techno

Demon Hunter

Broken teeth, a shattered jaw
Ten to one, behold my God
Wicked sons of Heaven’s loss
Raise your own inverted cross

[The lyrics for this song came to me when I was reading the Psalms. It talked about the “kings of the earth” and worldly rulers. My intention is to warn these people, in our day and age, to beware of the almighty power of God.

It also acts as a call for everyone who listens, to lay down their worldly cares, take up their swords, and fight with us against the evil and Godless powers of this world. To “storm the gates of Hell,” means to boldly stand in the face of adversity, and strike back against Satan’s deceitful ways.

Arise, O Lord! Deliver me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.
-Psalms 3:7]

UnderOath

P.O.D is an example or Flyleaf.

It's Christians playing metal, but not necessarily preaching. Christian bands don't have to be preaching bands, but the members are Christian which usually means they have clean lyrics.

The Arsonist by Thrice:

There is truth beneath the floorboards;
there is hope in brick and stone.
But they tell me just to shut my mouth;
leave well enough alone.
But I think maybe all that's needed,
is a match and gasoline;
because I don't think that any one of them believes that there will be a reckoning.

But I will see this city burn.

Yes, it is bands preaching about the lord. Stryper are one of the main known bands for Christian Metal. You can find their music and videos on youtube. There are other Christian Metal bands out there as well - search around and you will find them.

look up As I Lay dying lyrics

ive never really heard of christian metal but i love christian rock. the bands casting crowns, superchick, underoath, switchfoot, haste the day, david crowder, sonic flood, mercy me, hawk nelson, relient k, kutless, stellar kart, leeland, jars of clay, seventh day slumber, third day, the afters, thousand foot crutch. they can all be related to mainstream artists but have christian messages.

it's metal that basicly has a generally positive message. the members of the band are christians. it doesnt neccasarily preach. heres an example of christian metal lyrics.
this is underoath.

I've been up at this all night long
I've been drowning in my sleep
I've prayed for your safe place
And its time for us to leave

Time is running, its running on empty and the gas is running out
I've decided that tonight is the night
That I set love aside
Full speed ahead this seems to be the place
I've seen this once before
Planned perfection sought in my dreams
Hoping this would take you home

My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
So kiss me one last time

Around this turn where the cross will cast your shadow
The people will all gather
To remember such a day
Where the flames grew as high as trees
And the world stopped for you and me

My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
Kiss me one last time
(Shut your eyes)
My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
(so hold on tight)
Kiss me one last time
(Shut your eyes)

I will now bring new meaning to the word alone
Endless nights of dreaming of life
And the days we should have spent here

Drowning in my sleep I'm drowning in my sleep
Drowning in my sleep I'm drowning in my sleep

Glass shatters and comes to a halt
I thought we'd be there by now
I thought it would be so much quicker than this

Pain has never been so brilliant
I made sure you were buckled in
Now you can walk hand in hand
Hand in hand with him

My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
Kiss me one last time
(Shut your eyes)
My knuckles have turned to white
There's no turning back tonight
(so hold on tight)
Kiss me one last time
(Shut your...)

christian metal. its pretty cool.

"Oh, Christian music isn't necessarily about praising and preaching, it can be about anything godly... blah blah blah"

Whatever. I call bullsh. Almost every single lyric from every christian band I have ever bothered to look up has a direct praise or preaching message. The only thing that differs is how overt they are.

Christian music is music for christians, intended to support and reinforce their beliefs. It's also music that can be used to attract and convert non-christians - which is a major reason why you don't hear christian music that doesn't resemble mainstream music. Christian music tends to lag a few years behind secular music in general, for the simple reasons that christians are very reluctant to change their conservative preconceptions of what "good" music is and it takes a while before they catch on to new music trends and can start writing christian material in the same vein.

Take rap. It starts in the underground, in dub block parties hosted by Jamaicans. It slowly gains acceptance by mostly inner city black youth. Then it begins to go mainstream, and the "rapper" lifestyle begins to be featured on popular tv stations like mtv. It's only then that christian rap artists begin to appear. Underground - 1970's. Popularity - 1980's. Christian artists appear - late 1980's.

It is the same with christian metal, christian rock, and any other parody of music with the "christian" label attached to it.

Okay, I like Relient K and Flyleaf. So sue me. One writes a few fun songs that don't have much Jesus preaching in them and the other has a hot chick who can death metal scream. Mmmm.

Okay, I've totally digressed. Back to the topic.

I've heard Demon Hunter, and they're actually pretty good, musically. They're metal. Flyleaf - no, they're rock. POD - no, they're rock, in the loosest definition of the word. I wouldn't call Underoath metal... more rock. I guess Stryper is considered Christian metal, but I've heard a lot of scorn heaped upon them.

Saul

its talking about God but not only
