It was first used in the song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf when they referred to "heavy metal thunder"...in the 60's...

Steppenwolf used the term Heavy Metal Thunder in their song Born to be Wild year was 1968.
This subect goes into constant argument,I have no idea who coined the phrase" heavy metal". But I do know the founder of metal, Black Sabbath.
Now,the argument goes like this,many people will say Zeppelin created the sound,some will say Hendrix,Blue Cheer and even others,The kinks.
But the very first group to employ a dark sound is without a doubt Black Sabbath.
