Rap is violent, misogynist, oppressive and patriarchal - agreed?!

Question: I have seen hundreds of hip-hop videos of male rappers talking about their taking some b*itches, sluts and hoes back to their cribs, or beating them and mocking them. However I've never seen a female rapper do the same. In my opinion hip-hop culture came out as a backlash against feminism in the 1970s, and once we finally take away the sexism from male dominated cultures like hip-hop, we will have eventually won. It still promotes violence against women and gays, and still manages to influence our society.

Hopefully once feminism has taken over hip-hop, we can finally have equality in modern day society.

Agreed?

First of all you cant speak on rap as if all of it is like that.Cuz I can assure you that there is plenty of rappers that arent that way to this day. What you see on t.v. is just pop culture. And what is forced down our throats by corporate america. But there is plenty of good music that isnt readily available that you dont get to hear.

And no you are wrong. Hip Hop wasnt born out of the feminist movement of the 70's. Primarily because hip hops top artists didnt take on misogynistic topics until NWA. This was about a full decade into the hip hop movement. Before that were era were relatively innocent songs abou the enviroment they grew up in, partying, telling stories and having a good time. Hip Hop was born in the late 70's and didnt turn misogynistic in the maintstream until the late 80's. That is a full decade of non misogynistic topics. So no it wasnt born as a reaction from the feminisist movement. It was a movement by black artists who sought to express themselves but lacked the money to by instruments or formal training. Therefore they learned to rap and use turntables to make beats. It was primarily used to play at innocent house parties.

And maintstream female mcs are just as bad as the guys. They play into the same stereotypes mainstream male rap artists paint. Lil Kim, a female artist consistently putting out music to this day, just came from jail. Remy Ma, a female artist that was just establishing a career, was just sent to jail.

Look up Lil Kim, Trina, Remy Ma, Jacki O, and Kia. Look up there pictures, their album names, and there lyrics and see if they dont play into those stereotypes. These are the top female rappers in the MAINSTREAM.

But this is the difference. Its the Mainstream. But that isnt what is praised by every fan of hip hop. If you go into any hip hop forum on the internet. You will see consistent arguements from different hip hop fans about the way hip hop is being portrayed in the Mainstream. Be aware that there is an underground scene full of good artists making good music but dont get noticed in. If your a fan of rock you know of artists who are underground sensations that dont get publicized as much as the pop mainstream band. Well hip hop is the same way.

How can there be equality if women take over, then it would be the exact same except reversed. And also, I agree that some rap artist, who don't deserve to be called artists. rap about b.s things suck as money and bi*ches, but not all rap is like that. Some artists like myself rap about life and reality and our perspectives of the world....listen to my music and see if I can change your mind.

yeah but its still good muzik!

Dude, do u ever stop n learn to fink...i mean honestly...

what on earth gave you the understanding that the hip-hop mainstream music industry is sexist or male dominated. Hip-hop is simply something that appeals more greatly to men, because of the depiction of images that appeal to teenage males, i.e. violence. There are plenty of music industries that are dominated by females. Hip hop isn't solely dominated by males too. Female rappers are also becoming more dominant and influential to the stylings of rap music too, particularly since the early 1980's with rappers such as salt n pepa, and probably you've never seen a female rapper do the same simply because a minortity of rapes are performed by females and often the depth/intricacy of female rap songs go beyond the simple notions of the controversy of gang violence and life within the 'gutter' as the hip hop males tend to depict and even nowadays there is an evident transition of hip hop being about violence to inner-conflicts and moral dilemnas.
Learn to view things from a broader spectrum and analyse every issue before expressing a biased perspective. The world isn't a male dominated society, women are provided with equal opportunities too and are dominate in a range of streams.

Saying rap is violent is just like saying feminists are women with penis envy.

You can't catagorize one group into one lump. I'll admit, yes a lot of main stream rappers out there do rap about violence and speak down on women, but I know a lot of lesser known artists that stray away from that. Examples Del tha Funky Homosapien, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, and Saul Williams. What you should really be asking is why has the violence and downgrading women become so popular in the mainstream rap genre.

And to only say it's in rap music I think is also absurd. I can think of other genres of music that you could fit into this catagory but once again, not all artists fit into your view of the genre.

you must be trying to get a response from someone but how about we look at all the problems caused by greed and power perpetuated by both sexes.
Hmmm make you think about the power switch don' it!?

If you are the best that modern feminism has to offer, then I don't hold out much hope for it.
You've obviously never seen
a) Any hip hop outside of the tiny little pieces of videos you see on MTV
or
b) A Lil Kim video.

If feminism "takes over" then how can we have equality? What's equal about denying someone freedom of artistic expression.

Your little rant disguised as a question here is a highly ignorant one. You clearly know absolutely nothing about hip hop, so I have no resect for you for trying to take a stand when your opinion is such an ignorant one.
And as someone who grew up under Thatcher, I know from first hand experience that letting women run things isn't always the best way to go.
You want equality? Well, start acting like it. And while you're at it, educate yourself.

Oh, and "hip hop culture came out as a backlash against feminsm"?! Are you freaking serious with this garbage??? Check your history you fool.

i think this question wasnt the greastest questions.....thats like saying, you think that fast food restaurants are bad, or oil companys are bad...but thats how they make their MONEY...now if you believe the music, and continue to listen to the "black" music....(refering to one of your answers) then thats on you.

@ Emma, are you trying to be racist or jus proving a point?
i honestly don't know which one ..

No I disagree.

I agree your mother deserved everything your father dished out to her and more!! :@)

"Rap is violent, misogynist, oppressive and patriarchal."

Wow, I did not know that. Did you know that all feminists are lesbians?

many rap artists son't just rap about b*tch*s and hoes they rap about how hard life is and how to make a living. if you don't truly understand what hip hop stands for then don't criticize it like that. Also hip hop wasn't born out of feminism movements. It was made to explain the troubles of everyday life in a manner everybody would enjoy

what do you say to a girl with two black eyes?

nothing shes already been told twice.

You feel that way because you are only exposed to MAINSTREAM rap. (MTV,BET)

And I disagree!

So...it's not ok for hip hop artists to generalize about women, but it is ok for you to generalize about hip hop artists?

Ok people have already mentioned it but LIL' KIM she's got songs that rip up men, like the song "suck my d*ck" line out of song "if i was a dude i would tell you to suck my d*ck" and "all i want to do is get my pussy sucked" that's just one of her songs but please there's Trina, Remy Ma that have some **** about men.
i don't see it as sexist at all, yeah there's allot more males in the rap industry but there's not a lot girls that want to go out spittin raw.
but whats wrong with a bit of violence in rap at least its in a song and not on the streets, its emotionally type of music you get angry rap, sad rap, happy rap, sexy rap, and sex rap please you got to look into rap music allot more.

Thanks for pointing that out, I would have never known.

?

Wow. I guess you don't know the history of Hip Hop. Hip Hop was created as a form of art to relate to African Americans and Latinos in the Hood. Early Hip Hop music was influence by early R&B and Soul music for partying purposes. Once White America in Record Companies saw that they can make money and destroy Black culture at the same time, they started pumping out this stupid music you hear now. Hip Hop has been destroyed by White greedy CEOs from the Record Companies.

yes. its the American way

I hate rap I prefer hard rock/heavy metal music from the 1980's.

notice the fact that 95% of rappers are black?
