This Geezer wants to Know what all the current Genres of Metal are?!

Question: What are the different "Genres" and sub-genres, (ie..PowerMetal, Black, Grindcore, etc) and what are some examples of each?

I been listening to Metal for 20 years, and picked up a mag recently and realized I had NO CLUE wtf they were talking about. Back in the day all me and my friends tlaked about was Thrash, Death, Speed and Metal.

You got a few weeks?

Fonzie said it best, we would all be dead before we could describe all the subgenres.

It seems like if you slap any adjective before "metal," the genre already exists.

Uh there are way too many to name....

Power- Helloween, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall

Black- Gorgoroth, Emperor, 1349, Mayhem

One really big genre right now is metalcore, which has some hardcore elements (but mostly metal).

There's also death metal, and all the genres you named are still around.

As of late, I'm beginning to believe that there are more metal genres than metal bands....

The genres I recall (but can't claim to listen to) include:
Folk metal
Groove metal (???)
Math metal (yes math)
Post metal (is there a post infront of everything?)
Symphonic metal
Viking metal
Wizard metal...

It all makes my head spin...

Some I know:

Black metal - Dimmu borgir, satyricon.
Power metal - Dragonforce, hammerfall
Folk & viking metal - Finntroll, ensiferum, korpiklaani.
Gothic metal - Type O negative, cradle of filth
Death metal - Behemoth, arch enemy
Melodic death metal - Norther, children of bodom
Glam metal - Motley Crue, Twisted sister
Pop/hair metal - Guns N Roses, Murderdolls
Thrash metal - Slayer, Testament
Nu metal - Korn
Industrial metal - Deathstars, dope stars inc
Heavy metal - Slipknot, Marilyn Manson
Alternative metal - Marilyn Manson

Grunge - Nirvana, Alice in chains.

oh lawdddd. this could take me all day! i was actually reading about this on wikipedia with my boyfriend the other day.

of course, there is power metal, thrash, death, speed, and regular metal...most of those which i do not know about.

death metal, i do know...an example would be nile
black metal...perhaps, 3 inches of blood.
grindcore, is often related to noisecore. i would consider the great redneck hope, destroyer destroyer, headwound city, daughters..
grindcore can also be even further seperated into deathgrind, goregrind, and then noisecore.
then there is mathcore which has technical time scales. hence the name, mathcore. ex: protest the hero, ion dissonance, august burns red, as blood runs black.
then there's metalcore (all that remains as my example)

i've probably forgotten something :[ but that's about as far as my extent of knowledge goes.
