Its been around since the 50's...it was one of those dance craze songs. I don't know who did the original, but I am sure it would be easy to find out. It has been covered lots and lots of times.
My favorite version was a movie called Back to the Beach, a beach movie spoof from the mid-80s that actually starred Annette and Frankie. Pee Wee Herman performed it.
