Sometimes people date themselves when listing favourites in the arts (such as music). What we experience in life, while immersed in the air and radio waves of the commercialized music of the day, is remembered by these musical landmarks. It is like the sense of smell conjuring up a distant memory.
Regarding your list, there are only a few bands that I like enough to buy their 'album'. That is how I ultimately gauge whether or not I really like a band---will I buy their CD?
Only Satriani and Aerosmith make MY list, and I so happen to have their albums. A few I have never heard.
