Singing bass-problems?!

Question: My choir director moved me to bass from tenor a few weeks ago and now I do not know how to sing. When my vocal chords begin to vibrate more, I feel like I am singing too low and I don't know if I have to sing at the depths of my voice or a little higher. Any tips? Please

Hey! I see that nobody has answered you...that is bad! but no worries...I am here to try to help you lol! Well....the first think to consider is your teacher's decision...Does he know about voice? If the answer is yes...then listen to him/her. Did he do it because he does not have enough basses? or because it has too many tenors?

Now...the other and most important thing to consider is your own voice...Is that you cannot tune or cannot get those low notes? If the answer is cannot tune...is one problem. If you cannot sing the low notes, then you are not a bass or baritone. I did more questions than answers you want....but if you can clarify my questions, I will be able to answer you more accurate. Thanks!

Perhaps you are having issues because you are not a tenor. You must have a high range, and unfortunately many choral teachers take advantage of any male voice that can sing high notes. I see it all the time. I used to teach chorus. You will be surprised how many true sopranos are switched to the alto section because the have low notes, and the same goes for baritones switched to the tenor section. If a section is lacking in sound, they will sacrifice your true vocal fach to balance the sound.

If you are having those issues, ask your choir director to switch you back to the bass section. If you were a true tenor, the ability to sing in your higher register wouldn't give you that much trouble. Actually, it would be easier. Singing out of your vocal fach can be dangerous in the long run, and if you just do not feel comfortable with the switch, ask the change back to bass. If your chorus teacher asks why, tell him your passagio, or the place where you feel at home vocally is in the bass section. If your director thinks your voice will be in danger of damage by your discussion, he/she will switch you back. At least a wise choir director would. It sounds like a case of bad judgment on the director's part, and you should not be made to alter your comfortability to please your director. If you come with respect about your concern with your teacher, it will work out. Don't try to come up with another way to sing to sound like something you are not. Trust me. I have been teaching voice for a while now. I have been in your shoes, and it is NOT worth it.
