Bass guitar help?!

Question: I just started to learn how to play the bass and the stupid book that I got told me how to play a note but not how to end it. I know ending a note is one of the easiest things to do but I'm not quite sure.

to end a note, you just put the side of your hand that you pick with on the string that's vibrating, if you want a slow, fading out ending, then you just turn your volume knob down slowly while letting the note ring out.
