What is Emo music?!

Question: I know this has been asked before but I haven't seen a good answer that didn't involve fashion. I know the fashion. the hair , the eyeliner, sexually ambiguous attitude. I get that part.

So hear me out... I have heard FOB, they sound like Pop to me. Early MCR had a punk influence( Yes I listened to the links given me in my last quesion) now its more Pop . Death Cab for Cutie.. Pop... PATD... POP....

I expected it to be a subgenre of Goth music. It no where near it. Is Emo a sub genre of pop? Does anyone actually know what Emo is? Explain to this confused rocker.

I'm to the challenge. It sounds like pop mostly because it IS indeed pop music. Take away the idiotic lyrics and what you're left with is shiny, happy, glistening pop tunes. Now comes the secret ingredient, which defines the brand name. Let's make the lyrics a little dark and twisted. However, not in the same way old school Goth was. Rather more dark and twisted as if it were an audio cartoon. Emo music is far closer to pop-punk than Goth. The fashion was stolen from the Goth culture. So, what you're left with is this horrible hodge podge of corporate manufactured b.s., stereotypes, and fashion.

Death Cab For Cutie is closer to indie than emo, although there appears to be a lot of cross appeal.

real emo...isnt a full on genre of music to me...its just real emotional rock music...its very sad and melodramatic...but it all kinda got sold out by the mall kids who decided to make it a fashion and give crappy bands that name

Emo bands to me are Vanna, Chiodos, Sunny Day Real Estate, Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, Silverstein.

MCR and FOB aren't emo, they are pop like you said, but all their dumb fans feel that they are being Alternative by listening to them. :|

emo is more like the screaming stuff u kno...
afi is a good emo band but i dont really like the scremo stuff im more rock

As far as I can tell it's a sub genre of rock with emotional lyrics, which means almost all songs are emo. I think bands like Dashboard Confessional and Hawthorne Heights got grouped into the same genre as first wave emo bands such as Sunny Day Real Esate and Fugazi. Today's emo bands seem to include Jimmy Eat World and Further Seems Forever.

Emo bamds are more about the look, thats is how they usally get in 2 sub catagories, but one emo band is Aiden, check them out and that should help. And also look up emo music on Wikipedia or google that should also help

I don't have an answer to the question. I'm just pissed that some douche bag would call Vanna emo. Vanna is f*cking metalcore. Get it right. Don't be ignorant.

Edit: True, Persophone :)

I think Emo is Emo. It doesn't really make sense. My opinion is that some one made the category up. They did this to be different than the others. It really is like goth/punk pop. Wierd

I like to think it's any rock-ish music with very emotional lyrics, and usually acoustic.

I don't really think of it as a genre, but rather a type of song I guess.

But that's just how I choose to think of it.

It was never really a genre, people just made it into one.
MCR haven't sold out like people say, they just tried something new for the black parade and went more queen/ballady, although for their fourth album they say they are going back to their punk roots :D

Emo is meant to be emotive music, but really it shouldn't be a genre, 'emos' just listened to it, and it has been labeled emo :)

I dont honestly know..people are just so like that.

I guess they sound like pop but I guess people just dont like that and dont like style.

They like bad rap instead.

Emo music isn't necessarily music which is emotional.

In modern days emo means - pop punk music which is heavily harmonised with harmonies from guitar and keyboard.. With a very high pitched singer and backing vocals.

Its usually about love and girls rather than self harm.

I neither know, nor do I any longer care. I find myself lumping any manufactured pop rock that seems too poserish into this category. If you figure it out, let me know...

Emo is depression, blades, and eyeliner wrapped up in a nice lil' bubblegum-pop-whine fest...j/k. Smooch...let me have it MCRmy!!!!

metal rock with people sreaming
