Hmmm...can YOU remember the smell of the High School gym locker room? No, really it seems to me like he's talking a lot about being an insubstantial misfit and not being able get past his short comings. Kind of an inner look at himself as exhibited in the subliminal messages about himself that he wrote into the song I Hate Myself & I Want To Die. I don't know what kind of kid Kurt was in high school, but it seems to be that he didn't quite fit in and wanted desperately to be someone. The sad story is that he WAS someone, who was very talented, he just didn't seem to think so. But of course he had the help of a mentally disturbed girlfriend. IN THE VIDEO you notice the old Janitor is quite a focus. A focus on a nobody. A janitor. But why? Did Kurt feel like that janitor, watching from the sidelines? Plus Kurt's attire, it's totally boring. It's not a bright spiffy "I'm A Star In A High School Outfit." It's a mystery we'll never know unless Dave Grohl or Novoselic reveal the secrets behind the song.

mmm, wwll i cant say for sure like wut every word means but i think overall its just kinda saying that teens should be anarcists, or rebel i think he just got inspired by the young spirit of teenagers, just a guess (that is, if you listen to the rest of the lyrics) great song
Hmm...besides adolesence I think the song could be about confusion. Possibly about pointlessness. I'm not sure though.

No, theres not much meaning. Kurt wrote songs melody first, and then put in lyrics from his poetry, diaries, or other sources as is the case in the title of this song. The story I heard is that he was out with some friends and a female friend of his graffitied "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on the wall.
I think it's about being a teenager and putting together a garage band and playing only for a small, yet dedicated fanbase: your friends. Anyone who's ever had a high school band knows exactly what Kurt was singing about.
