Tube amp help?!

Question: Question
I've been considering getting a tube amp
although i know the general concept of it

it'd be really helpful if you can give a detailed explanation on...
how it works
how many tube amp watts = solid state watt roughly
maintenance of it
how to take care of it
anything else important?

Briefly, a tube amp has more dynamics than a solid-state. More punch is another way of putting it - they sound louder. The wall outlet thing you asked about is pretty insignificant. I glanced at a 100 watt Marshall I have close by and it indicated 175 watt power usage. A hair dryer is 1500 watts typically. They are heavier. Maintenance is really no big deal. I used tube amps (mostly Ampeg V-4s) exclusively when I played out and loud. You might want to invest in a set of Groove Tubes after the tubes that come with the amp start going bad. The tubes should be tested occasionally - like every 6 months or so or when you suspect problems. You should be able to find an electronics repair shop that will do that for little or nothing. OH, here's the big thing to me - tube amps just plain sound better. It's a warmer sound. Good luck and good choice on the tubes thing!
