The song was written for teenage singer Stacy Lattisaw and was about kids calling each other up on the phone. Then she decided to sign with another record label so the song was re-written with more mature lyrics for an older singer. Reportedly, Anita Ward, the singer who did record it, was rather uncomfortable with the lyrics. She was a very religious person and some of them bothered her.
