What's the point of Music History?!

Question: oh my gosh, I have to do music history and it is sooooo boring. And I get why I have to do theory, but history??!!??!! It's not like it's gonna help me in any way. You know a couple famous composer, know their major piece, and that's about it. But of course, you need to study this and that, and you are never going to use that info again. It's completely pointless! Anyone agree with me, or if not, what's the point?

It's not exactly pointless. Music history is an essential class that shows us what music has become since its early revival during the Renaissance period. The History of Music is more important than many people would think.

For example, Rhythm and Blues, which we now call "R&B" or RnB. It came from the urban black communities in large cities such as Chicago and Harlem, where many blacks started music called simply "The Blues," which then evolved into a more upbeat, rhythmic type of music, turning into Rhythm and Blues. Because of R&B, a genre known as "Rock N Roll" was made, and then, R&B evolved decade by decade, eventually leading to great R&B groups, and others.

Also, think this: We at least owe a class to those who created music centuries before us. Without great composers from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and early contemporary eras, where would music be today?

It gives you an idea of where music has come from and more importantly, how it has evolved.

For example, If you can relate to how someone like Eric Clapton was influenced by Blues singers from years and years ago, like Albert King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, etc. and shaped his music into something of his own, that becomes amazing when you listen to it !

For the most part, nothing is original, it's all been imitated and shaped into something a little bit different, which then makes it an original on its own.

Should be an interesting class !
