I see a lot of people on here bashing "commercial rap" but...?!

Question: what do you define as commerical rap? I mean do you say somebody is when they appear on TV and rap like others? I mean Jay-Z or Snoop Dogg raps about the same things as 50 Cent or Young Jeezy (drugs, getting money, the hood etc etc etc), but people only stick up for Jay, and say people like Young Jeezy are too commercial...what are your thoughts?

Commercial rap to me is when someone wants to break into the rap scene so they just throw together some songs with some tight beats and weak lyrics just so they can get paid. While Jay-Z might rap about money and hos and cars, he does it in a much more clever way. For instance his song girls, girls, girls puts a very clever twist on the average "I got a lot of hos" song. Or take Nas's song Rewind which is essentially about killing someone who pissed him and his boys off. Rather than just rapping about killing people and how big his gun is Nas tells a story about how the entire day went, starting at the end when the guy is killed and 'rewinding' back to when he got the call from his boy telling him where the guy was. That is true rap (also known as hip hop). Some examples of your less than creative commercial rappers are Hurricane Chris, Yung Joc, Young Jeezy, Lil Flip, and just about anyone else with Young, Lil, or Big in their rap names (Uncreative names are a sign of uncreative raps). These guys rap solely for the commercial success and their songs have very little staying power. Try playing Lil Flip's Game Over in a party today and your likely to get "why you playing that old ****?" or "man that song is old". The fact of the matter however is that GOOD MUSIC NEVER GETS OLD.

Jay-z and Snoop Dogg is commercial too.

Commercial rap IMO is when you stop rapping because you love it but instead do it for the money.

Well, the ones you named are all comertial. Uncommercial artists are not rolling arround on MTVand stuff, ya have to search for 'em.

commercial is when it will add no positive contribution to the state of hip hop and it is obviously released just to make a quick buck, honestly commercial rap is aimed towards a white audience, and generally young kids who dont really know any better.
honestly, i never really understood the hype over jay-z, as a matter of fact i heard reasonable doubt when i was younger, and it wasnt all that to me, hes wayyy overrated, and as far as 50 cent, i think he was a main contributor to the downfall of hip hop, that and snap music (lol, so sad)

Commercial is being signed to a major label. If your getting spins daily on Radio/have a video on tv, your definatley mainstream/commercial.

Here we'll go off your examples. You want to know why people defend Jay and not Jeezy but their subject matter is the same.. break down the song 'Go Crazy' that their both on and its obvious to see who killed it:
