Cliff Burton or Steve Harris? Who's the better Bass player?!
Question: I know Cliff is dead, and he really pioneered some awesome stuff... but Harris was and is a major innovator in Bass technique himself.

Well, Cliff Burton hasn't really shined in too many songs. Sure there's "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" as well as a couple other songs that have amazing bass work, but Steve Harris consistently puts out great basslines and bass performances. Very melodic playing. Maybe Cliff Burton is the "better" player, but I don't think he did enough, so I prefer Harris. I would probably like Steve Harrison more even if Burton added more anyway....
Oh, and yeah, Justin Chancellor from Tool is great too. Haven't seen him in any greatest bass player lists though... Pretty underrated despited being in an acclaimed band.
Gotta go w/ Harris. He just has more stuff recorded so you can critique his playing more.
Cliff was only on 3 albums before he was gone.

cliff was a stoner, and had less energy...but he could do solos live that most guitarists even envy

he has a style of playing like no other, hes a great influence and he influenced me to pick up a bass
cliff is a great bassist to but steve harris is better with more experience and hes just all around a better player in general
iron maiden and metallica are great bands in metal history but iron maiden is the best
besides maiden would not be here or a big success with out steve since he made it and makes it what it is

Steve Harris redefined the Bass. He was the first to step from the shadows and make the instrument a centerpiece rather than an instrument that was handed to the least competent guitarist.
steve harris. he plays bass like its a lead guitar. he's awesome. i cant figure out how he does some of the things he does. and no offense because i know he's dead. but burton is overrated. people seem to idolize him because he was in metallica and now he's passed. i really dont think his playing was all that spectacular. you want great bass players??
