It's probably already been said, but it depends on a few things. How good do you want to be? How dedicated are you going to be to learning (are you one of those people who are just going to lock themselves in the basement for months and only play guitar, or are you going to do an hour here and there, or somewhere in between)?

It seems to me that if your head is in it and you're willing to put in some time, you should be able to play chords and change them somewhat effectively in a couple/a few months (make consistent positive noise). Then you'll still most likely need to become more and more solid, but you should be able to handle some of the basics. Playing and singing simultaneously will take a bit longer, but if you get at that early it will make the transition easier. It'll take some time, but the nice thing is that there are always little morale building moments that take place in the learning process. You get that chord to sound right, you finally hit that change, you played the song. You have to work for all of it, but it's incredibly gratifying.

Good luck.

That's a real open question b/c it's different for everyone. Depends on yr natural ability & your devotion to practice. Generally, it can take about a few days to a couple of weeks to learn/memorize your basic chords.

Depends How Good You Wanna Be, if You Just What To Play Afew Chords To Get A Nice Tune, Could Take Less Than Afew Weeks.

All Depends On Commitment...

that depends on your ability and aptitude for music

you can learn a half dozen chords and play a thousand songs but to play well, is another story

You can learn basic chords in no time.

A lot of songs you hear start out as lyrics with a simple basic chord progression on an acoustic guitar. That "song"is taken to the band and everyone works out their part and the result is the more complex, complete song you hear...

electric of acoustic? i've been playing electric for 21/2 years, and i just started to get good at it this year.
if you're going to play acoustic, and you just want to like strum chords to go along with your songs, then if you really practice, maybe like 6 months?

Depends how complex your music is really. You say you are writing music but don't say how. Are you composing them on a piano or are you using a computer program?
Basic chords don't take long to learn. It just takes a couple of weeks for your fingertips to toughen up then it becomes quite easy (and less painful). Playing scales and melodies is a much longer learning process however.

depends on the style. if you wanna accompany yourself only with chords, it shouldnt take you that long, only as long as it takes your fingers to get accustomed to playing them. if you want to play lead guitar or something on some tracks or whatever, then that'll take you a bit more time, only bc its more than playing a scale over and over. your inner talent (which most all people have) will come thru if you let it, and you'll be playing good **** people wanna hear. relax and let the musi flo. thats what its all about
good luck

you could nail the basic chords in a month or two, speed of chord changes takes a bit longer.i reckon busking standard can be achieved in 12 months.any better is very individual.

probably a year and a half but its worth it!

Years for most
