Why are there so many people on here that...?!

Question: feel hip hop needs to have some deep spiritual meaning in the lyrics for it to be a good song? when all of the old school hip hop pioneers were the complete opposite e.g. KRS-One, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Rakim etc etc

it doesnt have to be deep. it can be fun, it can be flashy, it can be strange, it can be sexy, it can be vulgar. it can be anything it wants to be in moderation. too much of anything tends to wear on people. its good rap songs thats not real hiphop but good non the less.

in the beginning it was fresh and new to everyone. it was a lot like now until the message came out and people was yeah life isnt always one big party.

LOL I don't feel that way at all

Some people take it too seriously I guess

I have resepct for old stuff, and I got respect for some new stuff too, I like what sounds good, end of story.

becuz it makes the song better but the people you listed are such great lyricists that their songs would be good anyway...plus they still talk about life...

yeah cuz hearing about how dj khaled is SOOOOO hood or how 50 cent gets money........ makes such a good song

Do you want someone who repeats and yells all the time or someone who has meaning in what they are saying? You got it mixed up and your probably gunna get bashed.

They don't need to be deep and spiritual they just need to have some kind of meaning, or purpose, or atleast be lyrical. KRS-One always put knowledge in his songs.

Yeah I don't think it should have a "spiritual meaning" but I do think the lyrics should be about something. I'll take a line from... Fireman by Lil Wayne

<Chorus>
"...I'm the Fireman
Fire, Fa, Fireman
I got that fire I'm hollering
I got that fire come and try me and
You can spark it up and I'ma put you out
You can spark it up and I'ma put you out..."

Lil Wayne is good but this is absolute garbage. I know every song is about something but it should be about something that ISN'T chains and money and cars and girls. Listen to Talib Kweli - Get By, you'll understand. That song is all about the struggle some [not all] people go through, and the thing is, it's all truth.

Your question is a joke!
KRS-One, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Rakim, they all rapped about what was really happening around them, not about materialistic possessions and goods. Hip hop does have to have emotion and meaning. Without it, the music is just fluffy pop-rap or pop-r&b.

Dam who pissed in yo koolaid

i agree with you , hip hop isn't what it used to be. its like all they talk about is going to the club its so lame.

First, it does not have to be deep in meaning to be a good song. It sure does help if it has some sort of content other than a catchy hook and thumping base-line.

Second, I think you are way off on your examples. KRS-One and Boogie Down Production was a very politically and socially conscious group. Rakim is also a very "deep" rapper

Run - DMC and LL were too big to damage their careers trying to be too political. Can't blame them. Cash rules everything around me.

I think hip hop is plagued with too many negative images and some of us would like to see the pendulum swing in the opposite direction before the artform becomes totally useless. (ie. Disco)

b/c rappers like that put meaning in their songs while newcomers just say somethin random
ex: my adidas by run dmc talks about how much he loves his shoes

ex: some new rappers just say my shoes cost and how its so much betta than urs

Im picking up what you are throwing down...I like meaningful songs...but I also like Jadakiss rapping about guns...He doesnt really have meaningful lyrics but on those tracks...but it still sounds tight...
