Look at the difference between blink-182 and My Chemical Romance and there's your answer.
Emo kind of flourished out of the underground of scene, if you listen to the very first Avenged Sevenfold album "Sounding the seventh trumpet" compared to the newer self titled album you will notice that the music is a little less heavy guitar riff driven and more towards the musician point of view. The same can be said for Atreyu and many other bands.
