Why do black people only listen to two types of music?!

Question: I have been black for like 21 years. But the thing im concerned about is how come white people get to listen to any types of music they want But blacks are only aloud to listen to rap and R&B.

In my city black stations are only allowed to play rap and R&B But on the white stations they are allowed to play gospel, metal, techno, trance, Country, Folk, Indie rock, Jazz, Disco, and Classic Rock, 80's pop, raggae, etc

I understand that they play each type on a different station. But on every black station they can only play rap and R&B.

Does this happen all over the country. and how many people think that this is a racist practice

I think you stated quite clearly a racist practice. You said "black" station, and "white" station. I don't know of any stations that are called that. Just because a certain type of race is more likely to listen to a certain station does not designate it as that race's station. Radio stations will play whatever it takes to get listeners and pay their bills. Turn the station and enjoy a different genre of music if you would like. My feeling here is that the reason you don't is because you don't want to hear "white" commentary or dj's. In any case, I don't feel you have a compelling argument, sorry.

Because all those other genres, no one likes.

never knew there were "black and white" radio stations... i always thought they went by the *GENRE* of music

this is common jackassery. i listen to korn, white stripes and smashign pumpkins. i am black.

umm dude, there are alot of Jazz and Blues stations out there. both of wich are "black" music. and besides, who says only white people can listen to "white stations" and black people can only listen to "black stations"

and btw what is "like 21 years" its either 21 years or it's not. and also please let me know what you were before you became black? "Ive been black for like 21 years" GTFOH!

thats because its the majority of african americans taste is music, thats kind of like how alot of white kids listen to rap music

Blacks aren't only allowed to listen to two types (I would argue Gospel would be a third, however)... We live in a society that stereotypes. By saying blacks only listen to Rap/R&B, you are allowing the society to continue the practice of hygemony - grouping diverse people into set catagories.

There are no rules that blacks can't listen to "white" radio stations.... if you're not digging what's on the stations targeted for blacks - tune out! Feel free to listen to a mix. Music is as diverse as anything on this planet. You can find great stuff if you branch out!

The Most Famous Guitarist Of All Time Was Not White. You Should Know Of Whom I Speak (& It Aint Herman Li)...

What are you talking about? i'm black and listen to whatever the hell I want to. As far as the radio stations.........what the hell............do you live on Mars!!!!!!!!!!

Aloud?? Anyone, black or white, can listen to anything they please. Geez. What next.

THIS IS racist im white and i listen to rap and randb only

You've been black for 21 years??

Fa Real?

No it's not racist. . . the last time I checked I thought radio stations played music according to genre, which is why there are different stations. So if you don't like Method Man you can turn to another station and hear Incubus or another station and hear Led Zeppelin. . .I was raised to appreciate all kinds of music, so I'm pretty well-rounded when it comes to other types of music; I definitely don't limit myself by listening to only Rap and R&B because I'm black.

Why did you ask such a closed minded question? If you did your research in here then you would know that a lot of "US" listen to all kinds of music...wtf

You are right brother! How is the world gonna be a better place if we don't change our perception of how we are supposed to act, what do we listen to,what we eat, what we wear, how we talk etc.?You know what?To answer your question-i think that these so called "black folks"stations hire black people to cater to the black audience.Imagine them hiring a white man to DJ a station that plays the so called black music?Would black people listen still?Probably not as much.Listen man, listen to whatever you want.Don't listen to a certain brand of music to prove you are black. You are black, and thats that!

"common jackassery" I love that!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Let me ask you this, you say you've been black for 21 years, what were you before that?

Radio stations play the music that appeals to their target audience in order to obtain advertising money aimed at that same target audience.

I see my nine year old brother falling into the same thing. He isn't open to other music genres. I like Paramore, The Beetles & Taylor Swift but most Afican-Americans won't give them a chance. Its not "cool" enough. Which is ignorant. Whites give all music a chance((mostly)). I'm not saying be more white and forget where we came from. We should be more open minded people.

1st of all-way to generalize and second- way to work the racism in there. I can listen to whatever I want... ofcourse I live in Southern California. the racism we can do without. We all are the same people just unique individuals. Some black people may want to live up to the rap/r&b and only have a chevy car, but not all black people think like that. I listen to Country, Alternative, some techno and some rock too.

killswitch engage.. aint their singer blac?
but nah it must b where u live or somethin cuz i got a girl in my school. shes blac but she goth n hates rap.....
and ive met other blac ppl tht listen 2 alotta rock.
so itz not racist. itz sorta stereotyping.

Yeah most black radio stations only play hip hop and R&B. So? Maybe because it these types of genre appeal to the majority of blacks. It may actually come to a surprise to you that it isn't written for any of us to just like rap and R&B as some are cool with rock, techno, reggae, etc.

You sound ignorant 21 year old boy, girl, it whatever the hell you are and I think you have a lot to understand.

There is only good and bad taste. Racist has nothing to do with it. There is music and non music, the two types you mention fall under the latter.
Try to eliminate the word "like" from your vocabulary it is a teen age girl thing.

Only in the south. I know black folks who listen to techno and my dad listens to Lenny Craviz.

Okay here's the scoop, first off black people don't only listen to two types of music, by assuming so u make it seem as if we are close minded and limited to only a few types of music, that's first off. Second everyone is allowed to listen to what they wan't, this isn't slavery no more. Third off i see what your saying about black stations only play rap and r&b, some may disagree and say who said it's black stations. I guess you can call it black stations because black music is played on it and black people are responsible for playing it. But spanish people, indian people, white people, asian people and all types of people listen to these particular stations. Also black stations also consist of gospel, jazz, funk, and some rock n roll. Now the stations that play rap and r&b, (black stations) are rap and r&b stations! Just like they have stations that play rock, pop, techno (white stations) then that would be a pop rock and techno station! Or you have a station that plays all of the above. Mostly black people create rap and r&b, so most likely the majority of black people are gonna listen to it more than any other genre. The same thing with most white people listening to there music mostly. It's not racist it's just psychology, if 1 million blacks,1 million whites, 1 million asians, 1 milion spanish, 1 million indians were put into a giant room who would they most likely be comfortable with? There own kind! The same goes for music but it still doesn't limit you to a specific type of music you can listen to whatever you like, it's just what the majority prefers.

because black people stick together*

you have been black for like 21 years??? what were you before....just say that you are a black man....lol dude!!! like someone mentioned radio stations are catgorized by geners of music not race....you see it like that b/c the crowd it brings in the most....but its not a racial issue its a preference of music...now would you be in the ranchera station no, typically it brings the mexican culture in....b/c thats what they like

The radio stations where I live only play specified genres of music. I have never heard a hip hop station play country or folk, nor a soft rock station play a hip hop song. We have numerous radio stations that plays different types of music. There are reggae radio stations, soft rock, jazz, hip hop, etc.

I do listen to different types of music other than rap and r&b. Based on what you are saying, maybe this is because of where you live perhaps?

Me personally, I listen to about 7 types of genres.

You are saying you are 21 years old?
