I'm a mediocre singer?!

Question: When I was younger everyone told me that I should take singing up as a profession. My mother was against that idea, she never really supported me because she didn't want me to be under the public eye.I just gave up on trying and I feel like I lost my voice because I didn't practice much or anything. Now I'm pretty much mediocre, not great but not horrible. If I got a voice coach do you think it would improve my voice greatly?Would I be able to sound like I did when I was younger?

You have to view your voice like you view other parts of your body. You body most likely has "grown up" from when you were younger. Your voice has also. Your voice will probably continue to grow until you are in your twenties.

Just like your body will not look the same as it did when it was 11, your voice will not sound the same.

If your school or church has a choir it would be beneficial to join those groups. That would give you a chance to sing every day, even days that you do not practice. Choir teachers usually teach the entire choir good vocal technique so you will be learning about singing.

If you still like to sing you should do it. For now don't worry about how "good" you are, just enjoy making music.

Please do not try to sound the way you used to sound. Enjoy your older, more mature sound. Embrace what you have. Any voice can get better if it is properly trained. 16 is way to young to give up on yourself.

Yes but it takes time

For one thing, you will not sound the same as you did when you were younger. As you get older, your voice matures and there can be relatively dramatic changes the older you get. I know that when I was young I could've been considered a coloratura soprano. I had a very light and airy tone... now, I'm definitely a lyric mezzo, and my range has dramatically increased in the lower register. And this has just been over a couple of years.

If you are looking to your get your voice back into it's original (or better) shape, then I suggest you either start in with a vocal coach or some sort of vocal group, like a community choir. If neither of those work for you, start with some easy literature and then work your way up into more difficult songs.

There is no guarantee that a voice coach will make you better than what you are now unless you are sure to put in all of your effort and give it your best shot. A voice coach is simply that- a coach, not a miracle worker. But I know from my own experience that if you follow their guidelines and practice hard, anything is possible.

Good luck!

A voice teacher is a good idea and it would definitely get you back in shape. If you want to sing professionally, go for it. Start local and expand gradually from right where you are. You know you're on your way when they are asking you to sing instead of you requesting that opportunity but first, you want to put your name out there by calling some establishments such as restaurants or coffee shops and book some performances. Don't try to make money until you have successfully generated demand for yourself.
