Why is it that someone like Janet Jackson, who lacks talent with regard to singing and acting, is considered a bigger star than the talented and beautiful Jill Scott?

I listen to bout of these singers, but Jill Scott is a lot more talented, but Janet Jackson has been around a lot longer, and I hate to say this but being a success in this industry does not really have much to do with talent these days...the music industry is shallow...
I dont think you can really compare the 2. Janet is defintely maintsream & Jill is more defined as urban soul. All artists are employees of a bigger machine, and the "job duties & repsonsibilities" of Janet is wayyyy different than that of Jill
Janet's job is to appeal to the masses - light airy sound that is up-tempo and not too soulful. Dance music, a young sound, something for a generation who thinks their parents music is too "old timey".
Jill's job is to appeal to a group who enjoys the old "soul throwbacks", enjoys lyrical content and hearing the orchestrated effects of actual instruments that you played in school/church.
Not to say that these ladies are puppets, they each bring their own panache to their "jobs", and being a "janet" or "jill" isnt easy. I'm sure there are "behind the scenes" pros & cons to both genres.

Jill Scott is HANDS DOWN so much better. However, because Janet has been around longer and because she is more "open" with her weight -loss gain struggle that she is more popular. Also, Janet can dance. Unfortunately, I believe if Jill Scott was to lose a little more weight her career will go much further. That is sad to say because she is so talented and beautiful just like she is but that is how the industry works. Sex sells and for some reason they think only skinny people have sex. LOL.
I'll answer the questions straight up, then give an explanation.
#1) I'd pay more money to see Janet Jackson. Only because, it's more of an "event" to see a Janet Jackson show.... & she has a bigger catalogue of music. Plus, I've had a crush on Janet since she was Charlene on Different Strokes... LOL
#2) I actually would get both CD's, as long as their good. I'd probably get Jill's first though.

#3)... Okay, here goes my explanation. This is definitely a BAD comparison only because like LE BRITAIN said... They have 2 ENTIRELY different 'jobs' as entertainers.
Janet is strictly a "pop/r&b/dance" performer. She has been from day one. Jill Scott is strictly a 'neo-soul/songstress'.
Janet has gotten to where she is a little bit from her voice, more from her dancing, her stage shows, her image...... and the "excitement & extravaganza" of an "all around pop/r&b/dance performer".
Jill Scott has gotten to where she is mostly off her vocal ability, her music, her lyricism and a "musically centered" stage performance.
...By the way, I'm most definitely a 'neo-soul/urban alternative' music fan...& have seen Jill Scott a couple of times in concert... so, I definitely understand folks who think the way you do... but I still like good 'mainstream' stuff.... sometimes its few & far between... but Janet has been consistently good, in my opinion.
I like them both but in a different way Janet music is more of a dance music and to me Jill songs are lay back songs that make you relax and plus Jill sings a lot better than Janet to me.

First off, let me say that Janet Jackson does not lack talent - she doesn't have the best voice, but she does know how to put on a damn good show. Hers are the shows that if you only went to one in your lifetime, that would be plenty.
Jill Scott on the other hand - I would shell out money every single time she was in town, and if I couldn't go, I'd get the DVD (I'm about to buy her Live in Paris DVD)
I would pay money to go see Janet. However, I would buy a Jill Scott cd before buying Janet's. I enjoy Jill Scott's music, especially her latest cd. She's far more vocally talented than Janet Jackson. However, she'll NEVER put on a show like Janet. Janet may not be the best singer but she's an awesome entertainer and could keep me on the edge of my seat for the duration of her concert.
Janet is a bigger star because she's been doing what she does since she was 18. Janet has never had a strong vocal ability. Janet can dance and her choreography is outta sight. Jill Scott is very talented but comparing the two of them is like apples and oranges. Jill does what she does, Janet does what she does. They aren't the same.
