Did the 80s rock singers use vocal fry?!

Question: There's this woman named Melissa Cross who teaches people how to scream with her product "Zen of screaming". She teaches something called "vocal fry" as the correct way to scream. But from the sound clips I've heard, it just gives you a death metal sound. I want to be able to sing like Axl Rose, Bon Jovi, David Coverdale, Steven Tyler, i.d. guys with raspy rock voices - does that mean I shouldn't use vocal fry?

I really don't think that 'vocal fry' is the correct approach for what you are looking for...Nor the smoking or drinking route which have other consequences other than those that are vocal related. There are certain times when each of those singers sing cleanly as well....So you will want the ability to go in and out of that vocal technique, whenever you need to. There is a great place for you to go...I hate referring you to someone else but this guy worked with Steven Tyler. His name is Max Baxter and he has his own vocal forum

I hope it helps, good luck....

I aquired my raspy rock voice through smoking and practicing (screaming) a lot...
No joke...it's pretty easy now. You just have to laugh it off at the beginning when your friends make fun of you.
