Why isn't metal its own category? do we really have to be lumped in with roc!

Question: ugh what a world

Answers: ugh what a world

Metal is at a point where it is no longer just a SUB-Genre of ROCK Music... It is its own catigory as I see it, because there is so much sub-genres of metal like rock, that it is impossible to compare it to rock music.. There is like 20 sub-genres of "metal music." So yes, we need one.... Metal may have originally been a sub-genre of rock, but today that is not the case, you have speed metal, power metal, viking/folk metal, doom metal, death metal, black metal, melodic death metal, symphonic metal, nu-metal, metalcore, heavy metal, gothic metal, etc.. I can keep going, so it is no longer a sub-genre, it has fallen into its own catigory cause of how it has evolved over the years... Metal is actually indeed more influenced by blues than rock... Saying Metal is like a sub-genre of Rock though is like saying Rock is a sub-genre of blues, which it is..

Rock and Roll even has its own influences, what do you think people did to create it? The mixed folk music with gospel, blues and western wing to create rock...

Rock is POPular music, no?

For every Genre there are a billion other "sub genres" and metal is that of Rock. Metal is definitely Not pop, and i can agree with you there, but Metal originated from people screaming to off-sounding rock music. and then there are the other sub-sub- genres, like Metal grunge, From Rock, From Grunge, with a more metal sound, and so on........

So to answer your question, because it isnt. It is a take off, of other genres.

Alice in Chains, now theres a good, sub- sub-genre band :)

yep''

yeah ,who'd think to do such a heinus thing LOL?

Rock is defined by its conventional backbeat, which most metal shares. It may be louder, heavier, etc., but it is not stylistically distinct enough to crawl out from under the ever-widening rock umbrella.

lol i agree.. it should me rock and metal.. not rock and pop.. pop should go with other cr ap girly music

Good question. As that guy above me said, rock's defined by it's conventional backbeat, and there are many metal bands these days that lack that. So by definition, they aren't really rock.

the backbeat guy deserves the best answer.

A Rock & Roll category sounds perfect, metal is a sub-genre of rock so it would fit in there.

Give Pop its own category and be done with it. Otherwise every sub genre will won't its own place. This is a bit much, dude. Would you want Korn in your category? think about it.
