Future of Punk Rock?!

Question: Like, most of the bands are getting up there in years: Pennywise, Propagadhi, NoFX, Bad Religion, Rise Against, Ignite, Sick Of It All, etc. all in their late-30s and early 40s. Do you think that the sound and ideals can outlive the people who championed them? Cause eventually these guys are going to have to stop. And I just wonder if anyone will be able to take their place.

Greg Graffin of Bad Religion now has his doctorate in evolutionary biology from Cornell. But they're still going strong.

Somebody always comes along to grab the torch from failing hands.

There are new punk bands coming out all the time, the hard part is finding them. Here are just a few:

Gogol Bordello
HorrorPops
Blitzkid (they have a myspace)
Anti-Flag (still going strong)

With Punk pioneers like The Clash, they are still treated with respect after 30 years. These new "punk" bands however are simpleton and moronic pawns in the game of Music.

Rise Against isn't that old.
NOFX, Prop, PW, BR...yeah they have been playing for quite some time.
I think what it comes down to, is "can we write a solid album we are proud of?"

I love punk rock, and I would hate for a great band to be around for the wrong reasons...if they have to call it quits, then thats fine. Better to go out strong.

I hate most new punk music. It was a sad day in punk rock history when Green Day's first hit song was aired. Punk is more about attitude and lifestyle than anything else. If it's in any way pop or mainstream, it simply aint punk.

Weren't there punk bands before all of the bands you've listed? There will always be new punk bands, there's probably a punk band formed every 5 or 10 minutes somewhere in the world. Punk won't go away, it's a permanent subgenre. Besides, it's just like most other forms of music. The show you go to will have a band that is probably at least 10 years older than the crowd they're playing to.

Punk has been coming and going since the 70s, and I guess it will continue to do so. You don't mention the Ramones, now gone, or the Clash, whose sounds and ideals inspired the younger bands you do mention. I think punk rock keeps getting more pop-y (see Green Day comment above; I agree), but then the Ramones covered pop songs rather lovingly, and if punk gets too assimilated into the mainstream I think someone will come back with the raw stuff at some point.
