The 80s I think.

For several decades and for several reasons. Electric guitar and rockabilly music went hand and hand, so guitar is essential to the beginnings of rock as Elvis Presley, although piano and saxophone are also important to early rock. By the time the British Invasion of the 60s started, electric guitar had started to become the instrument most associated with rock and pop, and its only serious competition was the electronic synthesizers added to keyboards starting in the early seventies. Electric guitars popularity has carried over to almost any popular movie form, with the possible exception of rap and hip-hop. Basically, you're looking at a period that runs from around 1956 through at least the early 90s.
