I love it. I saw it recently performed by the English National Opera. My husband loathed it in equal measures. If you ever get a chance to see the old Ingmar Berman film of it (from the 70s), please take it. It was filmed in the Swedish royal opera house with all sorts of fanciful bits, and was charming, and sung in Swedish!
I think the story is stupid.
The three ladies of the Queen of the Night send the hero on a courageous mission because of his good looks. Since when does good looks imply bravery? Besides, they are the ones who rescued the hero from a monster. If there is anyone who should be sent on a courageous mission, it's them.
When the hero reaches the place where the heroine is held captive, he meets one of the henchmen of the heroine's captor, who informs him that the captor is wise, not evil. This one utterance is enough to change the hero's mind about rescuing the heroine. Try assuring any parents whose children have been abducted into religious cults and see if it is that easy.
I have read a book explaining the Masonic symbolism in the opera, but it did little to change my mind.
I still say that the three weakest plots ever written are Othello, Tommy, and this one.
