To me it's about how one day follows another, then you wake up and the best part of your life is behind you. You get up every day, lay down every night, and that turns into a week, then a month, a year, a decade. Your whole life can go by and leave you with nothing to show for it.
He's singing about a life journey of sorts, how so many things have changed, how innocence faded away from him, how after all these years, he's still running against the wind.

It's about the average joe's uphill battle in life, "always runnin' against the wind."
I really love this song
it's about trying to hold on to sth though having the odds against you... and how life can change the things that happen to you, but not yourself (as he looks back, but is "still running against the wind")
Still, I think "Night Moves" is a lot better (it's about the same thing, only without all the explanations).
What I get from the song is that at times during your life you feel like you are taking the hard way or having to work harder to get to where you want to go. At times having to break rules to get things accomplished.
Its probably my favorite song from him.
