A dead note is achieved by lightly resting your left hand across the strings without actually pressing the strings against the fret.

on guitar it refers to a note on the finger board that will not play correctly usually because the fret that it is on is damaged or the string height(action) is to low or the neck is bowed. it usually sounds as a note that is buzzing when you play it. to determine if this is the case play the note in question and move up a fret then down from it a fret , if the buzzing stops when you move it than just that fret is the problem if that doesnt stop the buzzing than the action is to low or the neck is warped. In any case take it to the local music store for repairs. sometimes this term is used(mistakingly) to describe a note that wasn't fingered properly. hope that helps if you have any more problems contact me, I am a certified guitar instructor. good luck!
