Suggesed Listenings for Drummer?!

Question: I am a drummer and I am in a jazz band. I need to learn how to comp and catch on to patterns with other members of the ensemble. What jazz records should I listen to to help me do this?

I have a few good ones for you...

Booker Ervin's album called The Freedom Book. The drummer is Alan Dawson. Dawson and the rest of the band are very tuned into what the others are doing. The bass player is Richard Davis and the piano is Jaki Byard. There is a lot of music on that short album.

Herbie Hancock's album, Maiden Voyage has Anthony (tony) Williams on drums. Williams is very sympathetic to the band. You can just listen to his ride cymbal the whole album and hear how he's supporting the changes and shifts in the music.

Wayne Shorter's album, Adam's Apple has Joe Chambers playing drums. Chambers constantly comes up with interesting support that is perfect for the moment.

Other great Chambers albums are Bobby Hutcherson's Dialogue and Components albums.

Elvin Jones was very tuned into Coltrane. Try anything from 1961-1964.

Thats all I can think of right now. I hope these are helpful. I think they will be, if I understand what you are asking for correctly.

The piano trio might be a good quick study on comping since it is a miniature big band of sorts. I'd start with anything Ed Thigpen did with Oscar Peterson, Jack DeJohnette in the "Standards" Trio with Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock, or Roy Haynes with Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous ("Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" or the "Trio Music" releases on ECM).
For actual big band comping, you can't beat Mel Lewis.

listen to the basie orchestra '50-present. always a great drummer with that band
