Get a guitar over the summer?!

Question: here's the situation:
i found out i'll be staying at an apartment over the whole summer without tv or internet. not much to do in the small town either. there'll be a laptop that i can watch dvds on but not much else.

i was wondering if i should consider learning the guitar, it's always been intriguing.

if so:

1. acoustic or electric? why? (i was leaning towards electric)
2. how much does it cost to get started with either guitar?
3. can you teach yourself?
4. which brand is a good first guitar?

thanks everyone.

1. You'll have to pick this one yourself. I will say if you're leaning towards electric go with that. There is very little difference learning either. You can switch at any time. If you learn electric make sure you keep it clean (no effects). They sometimes make you think you're playing better than you are.

2. You can get starter sets for both that are pretty inexpensive. These kits come with everything you need to get started. Granted, the quality of the guitars is pretty low but they do the job. You really don't want to be buying an expensive guitar to start with. Learn a bit and see if you really like it then you can start looking at more expensive options.

3. You can teach yourself but it tales discipline. I taught myself. You may say to yourself now that it won't be a problem but you get times where you just don't want to practice. I recommend a book called "10 Minute Guitar Workout" as a start. Also once you know the basics you'll be surprised how easy it is to start playing songs using tabs. An excellent way to learn.

4. As for brand, that is hugely personal choice. Ibanez, Gibson, Fender are all good brands but they have differences. B.C.Rich make awesome, unique guitars (look at www.bcrich.com) but they can be pricey and aren't the easiest to play. I suggest you go to a good guitar store and ask their opinion. Be aware though that sometimes the salesman will be biased to one brand.

1. acoustic or electric? why? (i was leaning towards electric)
That is a personal choice; you have to figure that one out on your own!

2. how much does it cost to get started with either guitar?
Most decent start-up kits cost between 200-400 dollars. Remember, with an electric you'll also need amps and plugs which will be included in the start-up kit cost

3. can you teach yourself?
absolutely. many people start by learning on their own. If it's something you want to pursue, then invest in lesson to tweak your skills.

4. which brand is a good first guitar?
Fender or Gibson
