It is literary and comes from Latin literature. To "fade to black" is to die. When one to a journey to the "shades" or the "darkness," it was crossing over to the other side of existence.

That is why in Lord of the Rings, Gandalf tells the Balrog to "go back to the shadow." It wasn't to say, "Go back to the dark place in the room," it was a literary way to say, "Die!" or "Go back to Hell!"

its a stage command in theatre

cinematic lingo , at the end of a scene , the picture fades to a total black . metaphorically it means to die .

It may mean what the others say, but in my mind, its like a death quote. As in, burned alive type of thing. Or, cremated. As bad as it sounds, thats what it means to me. Ash to ash, dust to dust, (already burned, probably cremated), fade to black, (Fatal wound, not dead on the first word, dead on the last. )

But thats my opinion.

If it really means a cinematic thing, then to me it means you sucked. Its like saying, I sucked, no one liked it, Ill fade into darkness cause no one cares.

But thats another angle to the quote, and completely baseless, just my thoughts.
