Recording Guitar/music?!

Question: Hey guys im a musician and i wanted to record some home demo stuff like on audacity, free programs like that. I download them fine and everything, .... ill record and play an E chord for example, and then ill play it back and it has a half step lower, i tried messing with the pitch and everything but its still not working and ive tried many programs to and the same problem happens.

its clear that the mic is picking it up wrong or something

thanks alot guys help would be appreciated.

Three possibilities come to mind.

One, you're recording and playing back at different speeds, which would throw the pitch off. You've stated you've messed with the pitch, though, so this may not be it. It would be very tough to record at one speed and play back in another on accident...

Two, you're playing it correctly but you're just not hearing it correctly. Straight up, it happens. We sometimes hear things differently, and usually a little flatter than it really is.

Three, you're tuning a half step down and comparing it to something that's at correct pitch - and thus sound out of tune. This is the most likely culprit. Either check your tuning, tune back up, or make sure you backing track is in the correct tuning.

Or you could be playing everything wrong.... but I don't think that's likely. I mean, how hard is it to mess up an E chord, right?

I've never heard of a mic picking everything up "1/2 step down". Ever. Ever ever ever. The problem is with your computer, your software, or you guitar.

are you sure you didn't try playing the note one lower if you needed it higher? and one higher when you needed it lower?
