Stetsasonic (group) - these cats influnced The Roots. I found out about them when KRS-One gave them a shoutout on I'm Still #1. A great solo mc you probally never heard of is Spoonie Gee. He got a pretty good debut album (Godfather of Hip Hop), but I haven't heard any other albums by him. They're both old school, so you might not like them, but if you listen to some of their songs on youtube, you might like them.
A non Hip Hop artist... I'd probally say... Anthony Hamilton. I'm sure you heard him before (like on the Jadakiss song Why), but I doubt you bought any of his albums. He's more soul than R&B, but if you buy Comin' from Where I'm From, I'm sure you might like it. But again listen to some of his songs first.

u can find a bad hip hop artist anywhere nowadays. i recently just discovered a song by someone called mann on itunes and he sucks. i also discovered a dude called theory hazit--listen to him, he's my favorite new artist.
