Is Nu-Metal rap and heavy metal combined together?!

Question: And which band do you think really invented and defined that music genre? Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park?

Nu metal is not rap and heavy metal being combined. It's an offshoot of heavy metal that mixes elements of hip-hop, hard rock, and heavy metal together. Some band utilize rapping and are called rapcore (Limp Bizkit, P.O.D., and Linkin Park are the best examples), but others are more aligned towards heavy metal (Disturbed, Mudvayne, and Slipknot).

Rage Against the Machine was different...they utilized elements of hip-hop and FUNK...sometimes referred to as funk metal. The forerunners of nu metal itself should be credited to both the Deftones and KoRn.

rage against the machine!

I'd say they were more forerunners than actually being part of the genre itself though

*edit* hollieblue knows her shizz, most of the other groups mentioned are watered down and commercialised focusing on record sales above any musical development. That definitely can't be said about RATM, who seemed to be totally non-conformist and actually trying to push things forward when they first appeared on the scene.

It is, sort of, but it's WAY the hell less technical generally than most metal. Most nu-metal has drop tuned guitars and they just slap a few strings and maybe play a basic chord or two.

And the "rapping" that the singers do is way worse than real rap...

It's sort of like the lowest common denominatior of both styles.

And yeah... Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, Insane Clown Posse, Slipknot and other crap bands typify the genre.

i'd say linkin' park, papa roach are also very good :)

pretty much
korn...

I don't think either of them. I think Korn & Rage was really the first and these bands ( Limp Bizkit& Linkin Park ) that soon followed can still be categorized at pop. There is nothing metal about them. Good example of today's Nu-Metal would be a band like OTEP.

I think calling it rap and heavy metal combined is oversimplifying things. Rage Against the Machine is more rap metal than Nu metal. As for who started Nu metal, that would be Korn, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit just came later on in the genre's history.
