What is the difference between Heavy Metal music and Grunge music?!

Question: okay ....
heavy metal...is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos.classic example.. Black Sabbath

Grunge.....is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal and indie rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics. The grunge aesthetic is stripped-down compared to other forms of rock music, and many grunge musicians were noted for their unkempt appearances and rejection of theatrics.

A bath.

A whole world of difference, galloping guitars, double kick drums and way more aggression are more synonymous with Heavy Metal.

Heavy metal is more directly influenced from more classical rock. It is more musical, and generally loud and powerful, and usually showcases your skill on your instrument.

Grunge is more angry and much less musically advanced - usually just uses lots of power chords.

This is why many adults continue to listen to heavy metal as they get older, but very few will listen to grunge. It's more a teenage thing.

And don't forget thrash metal and death metal.

Grunge is decent?
Also, grunge tends to be slower, and they actually sing instead of screaming or wailing. Also, you can actually hear guitars instead of just noise.
Pearl Jam is a classic example of grunge.
Edit: Alo, GRUNGE IS NOT EMO!
Grunge was around early-mid nineties, before emo

HUUUUGE difference. Heavy Metal music is typical 80s hair band music-- screaming, guitar and drum solos, big hair while Grunge music is typical 90s rock, Nirvana is probably the biggest example of this laid back, low tone, alternative rock and roll.

Heavy Metal- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erJc4dzZ3...
Grunge- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOL5cpwTk...

Heavy metal lyrics are shouted or screamed, whereas grunge the whole song is never screamed (although one word now and then might be). Grunge is more laid back and whiny. Heavy metal is more rhythmic and intense the whole way through.

Go onto myspace and try listening to Nirvana which is grunge. While you are there check out Sepultura which is heavy metal.

You will soon hear the difference.

Good luck

Grunge was more than just a brand of music, it can also relate to a whole youth movement in the early 90's emanating from Seattle in the US. Grunge was anti the 80's big hair metal that was prominent at the time.

*edit* lulz at the google copy and paste folks below me

heavy metal has many different properties for example image in the 80's many heavy metal musicians would wear leather and some artists even bought there clothes from bondage shops. the guitar playing is much different think master of puppets vs smells like teen spirit the guitar playing in the metallica song a heavy metal band is much more complex with many riffs and a guitar solo whereas in the nirvana song which is grunge its only a few powerchords and a simple solo but they are still both great songs.
in modern day metal the drums normally have very fast double bass stuff going on which doesnt tend to be in grunge. metal vocalists can often be heard screaming but in grunge music there is normally singing throughout the songs.

grunge is generally simple to play. not a lot of solos, simple beats, etc....

heavy metal uses double bass drumming, which sounds like machine guns, blazing guitar riffs and solos, and takes much much more talent to play metal

heavy metal...is heavier. maybe a little darker?
grunge is more of the emoish style. a little dark..not too heavy. but a little screamo.
