Where The Monkees a rip off of The Beatles do you think?!

Question: Rip-off is not the term I would use. Remember that The Monkees were not a band in the same sense as The Beatles, they were a fictional band in a television show. There were obvious parallells with The Beatles in terms of characterisation, comedy, and filming techniques but imitation is a form of flattery. The 4 Monkees were contracted as actors, not musicians, even though Nesmith and Tork were very proficient musicians and Dolenz and Jones both had musical experience. The Monkees early records were recorded using top session musicians with the Monkees providing the vocals. No big deal there (no more so than realising that William Shatner wasn't actually flying the USS Enterprise), but the problem came when the record company tried to imply that the Monkees themselves were playing on the records. By this time the group had already started making live appearances where they did play their own instruments so they then insisted on making their own records. It's worth noting that the Monkees and Beatles were actually good friends.

Well...yeah. But they were designed to be so, weren't they?

Well, I think that was the intent. If I'm not mistaken, they started off as a fictional band for the tv show, which was inspired by the Beatles. But, like Spinal Tap, they also played their own music, and demand led them to become an actual touring and recording band.

Originality is very rare in any walk of life, be it Art, Music, Science etc. 'Influenced' most certainly ! But I always thought a good Group in their own right. We are all products of accumulative experiences which we absorb to a greater or lesser degree throughout our lives.

The Monkeys were a manufactured group, brought together
for a television series of that name. They did not know each other before this happened and one of them was a boy actor
in Coronation Street before joining the team, think it
was Peter Noon ? it was not a rip of of the Thab Four
The Beatles

That was the idea, they did manage to make some great music though - Porpoise Song from the Head soundtrack is amazing, then when they split Mike Nesmith pretty much 'invented' country rock with Mike Nesmith and the First National and wrote a killer of a track called Different Drum'. And all from the kid whose mum invented Tippex, not bad ;)

As stated, they were created in response to the Beatles popularity. However, they were sort of the "Inverted Beatles", as they had 3 non-talented members and 1 very talented member.

Yeah, but they ripped off 'the beach boys' even more.

Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones were actors in the TV sitcom, The Monkees that just happened to become so popular that the guys actually began touring as a group. Were they a copy of the Beatles? I think it started out that way for the TV show.
Mike Nesmith's mother invented "Wite-out," a liquid that is used to correct typing errors. Mike Nesmith was the only one who could actually play an instrument very well.
