Most labels won't even take a demo unless it's solicited by a music lawyer they know and trust. That's to protect them from future lawsuits when an unsigned artist claims that a song they had written previously and submitted to a label gets supposedly plagerized by a well known artist already on that label.

Your best bet is either to:

1. Hire a good Music attorney who's established in the industry. Many will charge a flat fee for solicting your work. Expect that fee to be a minimum of $2,000.00 and much more for a top attorney.

2. Forego the attorney and try and create a "buzz" and have the labels solicit you. "Buzz" can be created by using hi-tech media, ala Myspace or Facebook, in combination with live performances and a lot of schmoozing with music press people in high positions who support the kind of music you perform.

3. Release a CD yourself or with a small independent label and promote it through Myspace (et al) and live performance. Again, if that creates a buzz, labels will come to you.

Just mailing a CD to a label, unless they are a really small "indie" label will almost 100% certain ensure it goes right in the trash.

Whitney's Aunt is Dion Warwick, so I'm sure that's how she got her break. Mariah I'm not sure about. Sometimes they break in young, like Britney & Justin Timberlake getting in on the Mickey Mouse Club when they were kids.
