People lose their accent when they sing?!

Question: I am watching American Idol and the girl from Ireland (Carly) has a strong accent when she speaks but then when she sings she doesn't have the accent. Why is that when people sing they lose their accent?

Because they are using the complete phrasing of the music and learning it all. People who sing often learn entire songs in a foreign language and sing it in whatever accent they were copying. Jim Neighbors who spoke with a horrible hillbilly accent, probably exaggerated for the role, as Gomer Pyle and sang in an incredible baritone with no accent is the best known example in popular culture. Country singers do it also.
People with a good ear can switch on and off an accent and imitate other people. I consciously adopt the accent of people I am talking to make them more comfortable, but do it gently and I don't have a good enough audio memory to repeat it accurately later.

LOL idk.
but its funny ;)

Normally. It is basically only noticeable while singing at the end of a note if they cut it short, etc. And I think we lose our accents because we're holding onto notes and not verbalizing as your voice with would with saying words.

So so true...don't know why though!

idk, i can still hear it a little.

Country singers and Rappers don't

well its because there are singing...not talking.

when i sing i loose my English accent and gain a Pilipino one, how mad

I don't think that her accent is that strong when she speaks. For the most part, I still hear the accent when people with accents sing. Maybe it's the type of song, the words, or the strength of the accent that makes it hard to distinguish.

idk but it is weird some people get an accent when they sing
like i've picked up an english accent when i sing

yes, we are.....
i dont know why.....
i guess the rhythm makes you lost your accent...

every singers lost it....

in spanish
in english

This is kind of relevant and funny. When I was in Thailand, I can tell you that that accent doesn't go away. I am probably the worst singer in the world. But... when I was there, I would get great applause when singing karaoke (yep, I was very drunk). So much so that they asked the regular band to stop singing and get me and my friends on the stage. I think they wanted the American accent more than they wanted good vocal skill.
