There are so made heavy bands both early and now modern. Black metal bands like celtic frost, mayhem, satyricon, emperor.
Gothic metal bands like cradle, type o negative*could be classed as doom, Within Temptation.
Then theres doom metal sacrelege, eyehategod.
Alternative metal Nine Inch Nails* could be classed as industrial, Smashing pumpkins, Tool*could be classed as art metal or prog to an extent, Rammstein*industrial?, goth? bloody brilliant!!
You get the idea, you NEED to check out early thrash bands, black metal, speed metal and some of the new wave stuff. Alot of the proper heavy stuff is japanese or scandinavian, but its all really good. Defo go with what all these people are saying.
