I (sort of) agree that replacing it is the way to go BUT... I work on guitars and you can take a cheap guitar (assuming that the neck plays well enough for you) and change out the pickups and electronics and have much better guitar tonally. Your strat has a plastic nut. If you want more sustain, replace the nut with a bone nut. Lindy Fralin makes some killer boutique pickups. (http://www.fralinpickups.com) Keep in mind that higher quality products cost more money. Fralins are GREAT pups but they'll set you back $160 a pair unless you can find them for less on Ebay. A decent wiring harness will cost you $60 to $80. (but at least you'll be rid of those cheap, junky ceramic disk capacitors and trashy tone & volume controls). (http://www.phat-chance.com) Last, but certainly not least, have you had your guitar professionally "setup" since you bought it? Even brand new guitars should be taken to your local guitar shop and "setup". They will dress the frets, adjust the saddles so that the intonation is better than the factory job, make sure that the neck is not bowed, file the nut so the action is better, etc., etc. Usually a setup costs about $40 to $50 and is worth EVERY penny! Good luck with your strat project!!

I play Ibanez myself.

My tip, find someone local. Stay away from chain stores. Most of the time the local shops can set you up with one part of the project and give you the number of someone for another part. Make friends with the local guys, those guys are usually in it because they love it.

If it sucks so bad, why paint it? Why not trade it in for something that you like better?

I think we all bought that guitar because it was an affordable Strat. I sold mine years ago. There's no point in putting pearls on swine. Buy a Telecaster if you insist on a Fender.
